We first met each other through our church community in DC. One of our more notable run-ins happened at our friend Kate’s house after a racial reconciliation event. Erick casually mentioned that he had just seen Ta-Nehisi Coates talking about his new Black Panther comic book. When Betty heard that, she was immediately interested! She loved Coates' writing about race in America. After about an hour of conversation, we felt a connection. But neither of us acted on it then. Fast forward about 6 months, Erick decided to take a chance and sent Betty a witty text the day she got baptized. After a couple days of text exchanges consisting of gifs, haikus, and pretty clear interest on both sides, Erick asked Betty out, in Haiku accompanied by a Kim Possible gif. It turns out Betty is a sucker for a sweet man with an adorable haiku. She said yes and a glorious adventure began.
