Alicia was driving back to Suttle Lake for another summer of life guarding and ice breakers when she got a text message from Kathryn. The message read "I just had to say hi. I couldn't not say hi. We have too many things in common it's nuts...Okay so 2 things, but when you're wading through the muck that is the internet, 2 things in common can feel like a lot :) Anyway. Hi, I'm Kathryn and I hope you say hi back :)" Alicia, being the sap that she is, texted seconds later "Hi Kathryn, I'm Alicia and I'm glad you couldn't not say hi ;)" At that point, they were off to the races! Kathryn and Alicia met in person at Suttle Lake since Alicia didn't have a car at the time and Kathryn had some free time before she started grad school at Pacific University. Kathryn drove the 4 1/2 hours to camp to meet a stranger that very well could have killed her. Lucky for her, the day instead was filled with awkward greetings (they shook hands), exploring camp and sharing their first kiss.
Kathryn had the perfect plan on how to propose to Alicia. The idea was to go to "Girlfriend Rock", where Kathryn asked Alicia to be her girlfriend and propose there. She planned on proposing whenever Alicia next brought up going to "Girlfriend Rock"; little did she know that that day would be right after Alicia finished teaching Zoom Sunday School. The plan was to take video footage and pictures of the area for a home video in the future. The two arrived at the Waterfront and set up the cameras to take a video of this beloved spot. As Kathryn started the video, she started to get emotional talking about Girlfriend Rock and Alicia was surprised at the turn of events and started to comfort her. Then Kathryn pulled out the ring and asked Alicia to marry her. Alicia's response? "Are you serious right now?" Yes Alicia. She was quite serious.
After Kathryn proposed to Alicia, Alicia was ready to get the ball rolling on her proposal. To ensure Kathryn would have no clue she was being proposed to, Alicia told her that they'd do a "theme dinner" and that she would have an outfit ready to go for Kathryn after work. The theme dinner would be a surprise for later. Alicia's favorite proposals were from an episode of Gilmore Girls when Max proposes to Loreli with 1,000 yellow daisies and then episode from Friends where Monica proposes to Chandler with candles in their apartment. Alicia got to work straight away with her mom, Cindy, on cooking dinner and decorating the house. Kathryn arrived after work and was told to keep her eyes closed as Alicia guided her into the bedroom to change. When Kathryn was ready, Alicia played "Glasgow Love Theme" from Love Actually (Kathryn's favorite movie) and Kathryn knew instantly what was happening. After lots of tears and hugs, Kathryn said "Yeah" to Alicia's proposal.
