Abbadia Ardenga il Poggio is a small, family owned vineyard in Montalcino, a town best known for its world-famous Brunello wine. The patriarch, Mario (who is now upwards of 90) still spends quality time with every group that visits, and is especially charming with the ladies! We were guided by Dino and Laura of Tuscan Contacts (http://www.tuscancontacts.com), who provided a custom, memorable experience for us last summer. If you're looking to party, ask to try the Grappa; for a pleasant surprise, finish things off with the Vin Santo, a rare and sweet Italian dessert "holy wine." For those looking to immerse yourself in wine country, the town is also a short drive away from Montepulciano (home of the delicious Vino Nobile) and well-known Chianti.
For our meat lover guests, this trip will offer a unique opportunity to try a genuine Florentine steak from an ancient breed of Tuscan cattle known for their flavorful meat. To emphasize its delicious natural flavor, the steak is seasoned only with garlic and onion powder (no salt!), cut incredibly thick (measured in "fingers"!), prepared and served bone-in, garnished with thyme, rosemary and sage, and drizzled with olive oil. We recommend Osteria Acquacheta, a top-rated restaurant just 20 minutes from town.
Just an hour north of town sits a scenic and challenging championship golf course managed by IMG. La Bagnaia is a topic rated course in Italy and is currently open to the public with advance reservation.
Anywhere you go, these four major food groups are sure to top anything available in the States. Try the balsamic that pours thick like syrup and you'll find yourself ordering by the case to ship back home! Take a cooking class, attend a tasting tour or sit down for a nice meal on the town - our favorite restaurant is La Terrazza Del Chiostro, which has first-class service and stunning views (link below).
Although quite different, both activities will give you the opportunity to explore the picturesque countryside from a unique perspective. Plenty of options are available and can be coordinated online or through your hotel.
For those looking for a little more excitement during the trip and that are willing to travel and brave the cold water, there is an opportunity to "riverboard" or "hydrospeed" in white water rapids just under three hours north in the Lima River. Click the link below for more details.
For those looking for a barstool, a fancy pour, some loud, hip music and a lively scene, check out this dimly-lit cocktail bar in town, which also has outdoor seating overlooking the valley. It stays open late, making it a great option for a satisfying nightcap.
