The Day That Began It AllThe Day That Began It All

It All Started With a Late Homework Assignment

It was the final day of Aiyana and Fred’s College Readiness class in 2018. All semester, they had quietly taken note of one another—how each of them showed up, the way they responded to others, and how naturally they made people feel heard. On that last day, Fred realized they both still had the same assignment to finish. For the first time, he walked across the room to Aiyana’s desk and asked if she would wait for him after the exam. He suggested they go to the library to work on it together, and Aiyana said yes. After finishing her exam, Aiyana sat in the hallway waiting, trying to appear calm while her mind turned the moment over—how had this man, so different from anyone she had encountered before, ended up asking her to study together on the very last day? Even then, she had a quiet feeling about him. At the library, Aiyana approached the assignment with focus, determined to finish what they had started. Fred, however, was far less concerned with completing it. Instead, he asked questions—about her thinking, her perspective, the way she approached the more complex, ethical parts of what they were working through. The assignment slowly gave way to conversation. Hours passed, and only two questions were finished, but something else had quietly begun. Fred would later say that it was in those moments—watching her think, listening to the care she put into her answers—that he felt himself beginning to fall in love with her. Eventually, they gave up on the assignment altogether and went to Five Guys for a burger and a grilled cheese, deciding they would try again at Aiyana’s townhouse. What Fred didn’t know was that the townhouse needed a bit of attention. Smoothly, Aiyana suggested he come over in a couple of hours. The moment he agreed, she rushed home, calling one of her closest friends to share about this kind, genuine man who already felt so different from anyone before him. As they talked, she hurriedly got everything in order. Right on time, Fred rang the doorbell. They sat down in the living room to “work,” but this time, the evening unfolded differently. The focus softened. They laughed, shared memories, and talked about their lives in a way that felt easy and unforced. Somewhere between the stories and the quiet moments in between, Aiyana began to feel it too—how safe he felt, how naturally he made her laugh, how different this was from anything she had known before. Eventually, sometime around two in the morning, they fell asleep on the couch. It was the first time Aiyana felt truly seen by someone her age, without expectation or pretense. Somewhere in that day—between the unfinished assignment, the thoughtful questions, and the laughter that filled her living room—everything began.
