Maynard Dixon

Maynard Dixon is considered to be the premier artist of the American West. He dedicated most of his career to depicting southwest culture including the landscape and its native people in his own original style using low horizons and dramatic cloud formations. His ability to capture the land and its inhabitants in a honest way has left an indelible legacy.
Dixon's frequent trips to Zion and Mt. Carmel in the 1930's eventually convinced him to build a summer home by hand using local stones, likely inspired by his good friend, Charles Lummis, and his home El Alisal in Los Angeles.
Dixon lived here with his wife and fellow artist, Edith Hamlin, and created a collection of work that many say are his best pieces. When he died in 1947, Edith spread his ashes on a high bluff above the art studio being built on the property as he requested, a fitting tribute where friends could come to pay respects and view the land that he loved.
We hope you explore & enjoy this place as much as we do.
