Opened in 1858, just six years after the incorporation of the City of Joliet, the Illinois State Penitentiary, Joliet, now known simply as the “Old Joliet Prison,” has – for better or worse been – synonymous with the City of Joliet for nearly its entire history. The Old Joliet Prison (Joliet Correctional Center), operating from 1858 to 2002, housed numerous notorious criminals, including John Wayne Gacy, Baby Face Nelson, and Richard Speck, among others. The Prison is probably best known today for its most popular, albeit fictional inmate – “Joliet Jake” Blues from the 1980 film “The Blues Brothers.” Since then, the Prison has made a number of appearances in films in television, including as the character of “Fox River State Penitentiary” in the critically acclaimed Fox series “Prison Break,” and in smaller scenes in Derailed, Let’s Go to Prison, and recently, Empire.

Opened in 1948, and still run by the Kotlick-Toll family, Calumet Fisheries is known – and recognized – for smoking its own seafood onsite. They use natural wood in the smokehouse, not liquid smoke or other industrial substitutes. They marinate the fish in brine overnight, then use only special oak logs to stoke the fire. They carefully tend the fish for hours... all to bring out its naturally delicious flavors. *Calumet Fisheries was named one of the five honorees for the 2010 James Beard Foundation Awards America’s Classics category. *Calumet Fisheries was featured in Anthony Bourdain’s “No Reservations” on the Travel Channel, February 2, 2009. *For 3 days in the summer of 1979, Calumet Fisheries hosted the movie crew from The Blues Brothers. Remember Jake and Ellwood jumping a bridge in the Bluesmobile? That was the 95th Street bridge, where Calumet Fisheries is located. *Adrienne visited often as a child, her parents referring to it as "Chicken on the Bridge" so they would eat it.
Located in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood, it is renowned for its unique culinary creation—the Pizza Pot Pie—a unique, upside-down baked dish made with Sicilian dough, homemade sauce, cheese, sausage, and mushrooms. Established in 1972 by attorney Albert H. Beaver, the restaurant occupies a historic brownstone building rumored to have ties to the infamous St. Valentine's Day Massacre, as it sits across the street from the massacre site and was allegedly used as a lookout point by Al Capone's men. The restaurant's ambiance is cozy and reminiscent of Chicago's gangster era, with dim lighting and wooden booths. The menu also includes oven grinders, hearty salads with the best homemade ranch and poppyseed dressings, and the secret gem on the menu - the Mediterranean Bread - do NOT miss out on it. *Make reservations online or wait in line for hours, up to you. You can also purchase their pot-pie style pizzas frozen to-go, along with their dressings and Mediterranean seasoning.
