Chicago is famous for its pizza, and there are a few standout places known for having some of the best slices in the city. Here are some top contenders for the best pizza in Chicago: Lou Malnati’s Known for its buttery, flaky deep-dish crust and rich, flavorful sauce, Lou Malnati’s is a Chicago classic. It's a must-try for deep-dish lovers! Giordano’s Another iconic deep-dish spot, Giordano’s is famous for its stuffed pizza, which is essentially a pizza pie. It's hearty, cheesy, and super filling. Pequod’s Pizza If you like your deep dish a bit more caramelized and crispy, Pequod’s is your place. It’s often a local favorite for its pan-style deep-dish with a unique, slightly charred crust. Art of Pizza For something a little different, Art of Pizza offers a wide variety of styles, including stuffed, pan, and thin crust. It’s a great place if you’re looking for options beyond the traditional deep dish. Bartoli’s Pizzeria A little off the beaten path, but definitely worth a try, Bartoli’s serves up some of the best thin-crust pizza in Chicago. The crispy crust and fresh toppings are a fan favorite. The Pizzeria (by Paulie Gee’s) For a more contemporary take on pizza, The Pizzeria offers delicious, wood-fired pies with a mix of creative toppings and classic Italian flavors. Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder Co. This place is a Chicago institution, known for its unique “pizza pot pie.” It’s not your typical deep dish, but a hearty, baked pizza in a bowl with a perfectly crispy top. The cozy, old-school vibe adds to its charm, making it a fun and delicious spot to try. If you’re looking for something different, this is the place. Don't miss out on their sour cream and garlic or sweet and sour poppyseed dressings along with their fantastic Mediterranean bread. It really depends on whether you're more into the classic, cheesy deep-dish or prefer a thinner, crisper crust. If you're in Chicago, you can’t go wrong with any of these places!
Chicago is known for a number of iconic regional dishes that truly capture the essence of the city’s rich food culture. Here’s a list of some other must-try Chicago staples: Chicago-Style Hot Dog The Chicago-style hot dog is a legendary treat. It's a beef frank on a poppy seed bun, topped with mustard, neon-green relish, chopped onions, tomatoes, pickle spears, sport peppers, and a sprinkle of celery salt. (And definitely no ketchup—Chicagoans are very passionate about this!) Italian Beef Sandwich A Chicago classic, the Italian beef sandwich features thinly sliced, seasoned beef served on a long roll, often dipped in the beef’s juices for extra flavor. It's typically topped with giardiniera (a spicy pickled vegetable mix) or sweet peppers. A local favorite at places like Johnnie's Beef, Al’s Beef, and Portillo’s. Chicago-Style Popcorn A local snack sensation, Chicago-style popcorn is a mix of caramel and cheese popcorn, usually sold at places like Garrett Popcorn. The combination of sweet and salty makes it an irresistible treat. Maxwell Street Polish This classic street food features a Polish sausage served on a bun and topped with mustard, grilled onions, and sport peppers. Bonus: Chicago-Style Sweets Rainbow Cone: A beloved Chicago ice cream treat, this cone features five flavors: chocolate, strawberry, Palmer House (a vanilla base with cherries and walnuts), pistachio, and orange sherbet. It’s a sweet way to cool down in the summer months! Portillo's Chocolate Cake: For dessert, try the rich and decadent chocolate cake from Portillo’s. It’s famous for its moist, fudgy texture and is often served with a side of chocolate frosting. Fannie May Chocolates: A Chicago institution for over 90 years, Fannie May is known for its delicious handcrafted chocolates. Popular favorites include the Pixies (chocolate-covered caramel and pecans), the delicious chocolate truffles, and their signature "Mint Meltaways."
Malört A local favorite (or, for some, a rite of passage), Malört is a bitter, herbal liquor that many Chicagoans have a love-hate relationship with. It's not for the faint of heart, but it’s undeniably a part of the city’s drink culture. If you’re feeling brave, give it a shot! Chicago Handshake (Old Style Beer & Malört) The "Chicago Handshake" is a local tradition where a shot of Malört is paired with a cold Old Style beer, a classic Chicago brew. It’s the ultimate Chicago drinking experience for those who are up for a challenge! Old Style Beer This long-time Chicago beer is often associated with the city’s dive bars and local beer culture. Though it’s not as widely distributed today, it’s still a staple of Chicago’s drinking scene. The "Pink Squirrel" A retro cocktail that dates back to the 1950s, the Pink Squirrel is made with crème de noyaux (almond liqueur), crème de menthe, and heavy cream. It’s a sweet, creamy drink that’s perfect if you want to try something nostalgic. Fitz’s Root Beer Root beer is another local Chicago specialty. Fitz's is a local favorite for homemade, old-fashioned root beer, and it's a popular choice at restaurants and diners around the city. Green River A refreshing, bright green, citrus-flavored soda, Green River is a Chicago favorite with a distinctive, sweet taste. It’s been a staple of the city since 1919 and is often found at local restaurants and dive bars. If you're looking for a nostalgic, fun drink that’s unique to Chicago, this is it!
As Chicago celebrates “Pope-a-palooza,” several local spots are offering fun specials to mark the once-in-a-lifetime occasion. “Pope-A-Roni Pizza” at Aurelio’s Homewood location: The pope’s unofficial favorite pizza spot will soon be serving a pizza dedicated to Leo. They’ll also have a Pope table that dine-in guests can request. “The Leo” at Portillo’s: No word on whether the pope is a fan of the Italian beef (a signature Chicago dish), but that isn’t stopping Portillo’s. The beloved fast food spot is offering The Leo, a “divinely seasoned Italian beef, baptized in gravy” throughout May, but you can order it beyond that as an Italian Beef - dipped.
