We met at Tauernhof in Schladming, Austria, where I (Abigail) was working as a ski instructor and leading worship for the first camp of the season. On the first evening, Johannes (Juan) came up to introduce himself after I invited guests to participate. While I quickly learned that music wasn’t Juan’s strength, his joy, kindness, and warmth were evident in the way he carried himself. I soon learned that Juan was from Spain - clearly not a coincidence - and got very excited, as I had just lived there and was learning Spanish. Juan then ended up in my ski group, something we now see as God’s plan all along, as groups were randomly assigned. Over the next ten days, we spent time together skiing, sharing meals, playing card games, and talking about life and faith. Our first official date was on January 1st, spent skiing and talking on the lifts. We then began a long-distance relationship while living in Schladming, Austria, and Sielmingen, Germany. During that time, we learned to be intentional, to trust God, and to grow together despite the distance. In August, while on a camping trip in Spain, Juan proposed with the most meaningful ring! Spain is a special place for us - it’s where Juan grew up, where I lived for a season, where we got engaged, and a place we both love. That’s why it feels right to begin our marriage here.
