Both the Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History are located in the same building close to Pitt's campus and are a great way to spend an afternoon. One ticket is good for access to both museums, and there are plenty of nearby restaurants and college-kid haunts within walking distance.
There are several Primanti's ("Per-manny's" in Pittsburghese) locations throughout Pittsburgh, but the cozy joint in the Strip District is the original. The restaurant's main claim to fame is putting French fries on top of the sandwich. In the same area are several new shops and restaurants in the Terminal, located inside the former Pennsylvania Railroad Fruit Auction & Sales Building.
So. Many. Bikes! This unique museum in the North Side is the largest transportation museum in the world dedicated entirely to bicycles. We spent an afternoon here in 2022 and were amazed at how many cool designs and features there were across the thousands of bicycles on display. The museum is free to enter and offers free parking.
The Cathedral of Learning is the second-tallest educational building in the world, and inside are classrooms designed in the architectural styles of 31 different countries and regions. (Fun fact: Cory taught a class in the English Room.) The rooms are free to enter on weekdays, but Pitt offers 90-minute paid tours on the weekends. Just taking a quick peek inside the main hall is worth it; the building's gothic revival interior looks and feels just like Hogwarts.
