To our family and friends - Abby and I have done a lot of reflection about our relationship and one word consistently comes to mind: gratitude. We are truly so blessed. Our families are loving, supportive and in good health. Our friends - near and far - pour into us and fuel our adventurous and fun-loving spirits. We live in Hawaii in a beautiful home less than five minutes walk to the beach. You get the picture: we are BLESSED. We share all this information with you - our family and closest friends - because we want you to trust us when we say we truly need nothing from any of y'all. All we could ask for is your presence to come celebrate with us during our big day. With that said, if you feel absolutely compelled to gift us anything we ask that you consider funneling your spirit of generosity towards donating to a foundation that holds a special place in our hearts: the Smile Like Sully Foundation. Read on below to learn more about Sully's story.
The Smile Like Sully Foundation
Sully and I's story began in December 2015 when Sully joined the Naval Academy's Sprint Football Team. At the time Sully was five years old and battling Stage IV Nueroblastoma. Sully and his family were introduced to the Sprint Football Team through a program called Team Impact - an organization that pairs children with serious illnesses with college sports teams. While the circumstances of Sully and I's friendship were unfortunate, the relationship we shared was life-changing. Tragically, after 10 years fighting two different cancers Sully passed away. Although Sully's time on this earth was short, his impact on my life and on the lives of countless others is immeasurable. He lived a life of selflessness always putting others first, always choosing to be joyful, and always smiling. Over the years Sully, his older brothers Jack and Mac, and his parents Amy and Dale all quickly became a part of the Sprint Football family. Sully and I developed a close friendship filled with lots of laughs, a little mischief, and a whole bunch of joy. From Sully, me, and some of our teammates almost getting banned from the Children's Hospital craft room, to laser-tag birthday parties, countless games of Mario-Kart and Sully, Jack, and Mac leading the Sprint Team out of the tunnel before a home game.
