If you are driving from New England, the fastest route is by taking the New London Connecticut Cross Sound Ferry. This drops you off at Orient Point, which is a short drive to the North Ferry in Greenport to Shelter Island. If you are coming from NYC and are not driving, we recommend taking the North Fork-bound Hampton Jitney or the LIRR to the Greenport stop, which is only a short walk from the North Ferry terminal. Please note that there are local taxi services but no Uber on the island.
The North and South ferries are cash only. Ferries can carry both cars and individual passengers. Tokens for individual passengers can be bought at the ferry terminals. Cars with passengers pay cash on board. The North Ferry departs from Greenport, NY and the South Ferry from North Haven, NY. The ferries are operated by two separate companies, so the ticket prices and schedules are different.
North Ferry (Greenport ↔ Shelter Island): Last boat departs Shelter Island at 12:45 a.m. and Greenport at 1 a.m. South Ferry (Sag Harbor ↔ Shelter Island): The last boat departs Shelter Island at 1:45 a.m. North Haven at 1:50 a.m.
We’ll have a shuttle running both Friday and Saturday nights that can pick you up and drop you off—just make sure to share the address of where you are staying on the island with us in advance. There is a Shelter Island Taxi Service (Island Car Service & Taxi) as well if needed. There is no Uber or Lyft on the island.
