We first met in choir at Rhodes College in 2014 and became friends on a choral trip to New York City. While we each thought the other was cute, we never came remotely close to dating and went our separate ways. Two years later, we both wound up at a bar to see mutual friends play in their jazz band. We started talking, and after ignoring the rest of our friends all evening, Abbie convinced her now-Matron of Honor Jill to drop the hint to Michael to ask Abbie out on a date.
One gorgeous November morning, Michael took Abbie biking along the downtown Memphis riverfront. Abbie must have sensed something was up, as she decided to get way too dressed up for a bike ride. We got close to the pedestrian bridge where we went on our first date, and Michael not-so-sneakily got us to park our bikes in a particularly scenic point overlooking the river and got down on one knee. Neither of us remembers whether the words "Will you marry me?" and "Yes!" were actually said (we were way too excited), but the ring got on Abbie's finger and we headed to a 2020-style (i.e. masked and socially distanced!) engagement party with our Memphis friends.
