Part 1 -- It's Junior Nationals in Fairbanks, Alaska during Cal and Zoe's junior year. None other than Parker McDonald is taking Zoe on a tour around the Rocky Mountain team's condo. He points to a hooded guy in the corner, ear phones and sunglasses on, generally uninterested by the goings on around him. "Zoe, that's my best friend Cal." Part 2 -- Fast forward 1.5 years. Zoe and Cal are both freshman at Dartmouth College. Outside of ski training, they spend their time sitting in Sarner Underground, plotting their transfers to other colleges. Cal actually follows through. Cal gives Zoe his mini fridge. Part 3 -- Cal makes an unexpected return back to Dartmouth, now in the class of 2019. By Spring Break, Cal and Zoe find themselves on a week long trip to Cal's home in Vail (who was the driver of this??). While swerving questions from both sets of parents on what exactly the state of their relationship is, they proceed to have the most amazing 168 hour date they could have imagined. In the midst of a snowstorm, the adventure gets extended through Easter. ...and it's still going.
On December 31st of 2022, Zoe awoke to an unusually slow moving morning in the Snow Family's Jackson Hole condo. Ben and Kate reported that they "were no longer interested" in skiing that day, and Oliver slept in. All occupants of said condo spent the next 2 hours slowly working on a puzzle, in seemingly no rush to wander out into the remaining sunlight of the year. At long last, Zoe & Cal began packing up to go backcountry skiing – an outing that was greeted by the entire Snow family with a general lack of enthusiasm. Zoe and Cal depart into the falling snow with little fanfare. The soon-to-be-engaged duo pull into Teton National Park, click into their backcountry skis, and set off on a long slow traverse. Cal hums along the climb, taking frequent stops during which he gazes into the sky and remarks that the sun is coming out (which it isn't). At the top of the climb, Zoe and Cal begin their transition to head down the mountain. To Cal's dismay, Zoe puts on her helmet before doing anything else, immediately throwing Cal into disarray. "You don't need a helmet" will forever be the one line of the proposal that both of them remember. After 18 minutes of slow snacking on trail mix, Cal takes a knee and proposes to Zoe at the top of 25' Short. The ski down is a blur, Zoe stating confidently that "our families will be so surprised!" Little did she know that she would be the surprised one once again when Elizabeth, Lucian, Ben, Oliver, Kate Zecca, Nancy and Ken Deline jumped out from behind a line of parked cars. Loud cheering, champagne sprays, Picnic lunches, and an entire photo album of iPhone photos followed.
