Part of the James River Park System, the main access to Belle Isle is by pedestrian footbridge from Tredegar St. on the north shore. Alternate access is by wooden bridge near 22nd St. or by rock-hopping from the south shore. Large flat rocks surrounding the island make for good sunbathing, but the powerful Hollywood Rapids are not to be toyed with and are not suitable for swimming. Children should be supervised.
Richmond is home to a wide array of craft breweries. If you’re finding it difficult to know where to begin amongst all the options, consider a brewery crawl in the neighborhood of Scott’s Addition. That’s where you’ll find several beer producers, including some critically acclaimed IPAs from The Veil Brewing Co. Next up, visit an original and local hangout, Isley Brewing, which has been in the neighborhood for almost an entire decade. Finally, round out your brewery crawl at Three Notch'd Brewing Company—this brewery is currently open for to-go and curbside pickup—and it’s best known for doing frequent collaborations. Most recently the brewery did a collaboration beer, aging beer in whiskey barrels, with the Virginia Distillery Co.
Quaint Church Hill, also known as St. John’s Church Historic District, is where Patrick Henry gave his 1775 “Give Me Liberty” speech. Farm-to-table restaurants, elevated BBQ spots, and Italian cafes sit alongside Queen Anne homes, vintage stores, and home decor shops. Chimborazo Park has a miniature Statue of Liberty and a museum in an old military hospital, while Libby Hill Park offers city and river views.
Colorful Carytown is a bohemian district centered around a stretch of West Cary Street, with indie boutiques, record stores, and vintage emporiums. Quirky murals brighten alleyways and buildings housing cool cafes, bakeries, and health-conscious lunch spots, while evening crowds fill farm-to-table restaurants and craft cocktail bars. Operating since 1928, the Byrd Theater screens movies in opulent surroundings.
Also known as Upper Fan, the compact Museum District is home to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, with works by Picasso and Fabergé. Nearby, the Virginia Museum of History & Culture houses exhibits on state heritage in an elegant neoclassical building. Brick row homes and detached townhouses in hues of spearmint, navy, and yellow line the streets, and old-growth trees and bold street murals add further color.
Rolling hills and winding paths overlooking the James River, it is the resting place of two United States Presidents, James Monroe and John Tyler, as well as the only Confederate States President, Jefferson Davis. Hungry afterward? Right around the corner is 821 Cafe (casual dinner like menu), Dinamo (Italian), and Mama'Zu (cash only, infamous grumpy service, but incredibly delicious Italian food). This will take you through the historic Oregon Hill neighborhood, butted up to the VCU campus.
