Things to Do - Southern France

The French Riviera is beautiful in September and accessible from La Penne, with Nice, Cannes, Saint Tropez, and Monaco all along the coastline Regional Express Train. The Alps, Paris, and Milan are also less than a day away. We've listed out our favorites below to consider for your trip.

Nice

Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sun, sea, and plenty of rosé—Nice has all the French Riviera vibes. Wander the colorful old town, grab a gelato, and take a dip in that impossibly blue water. From La Penne it’s about 1h 18 by car or ~1h 30 by train.

Monaco

Monaco

Tiny but oh-so-glamorous, Monaco is all about yachts, fast cars, and a little James Bond flair at the casino. Perfect for a quick, glitzy adventure. It’s just a short drive (around ~1h by car via the coastal A8) from La Penne.

Aix-en-Provence

Aix-en-Provence, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Think fountains, flower markets, and cobblestone charm—Aix is pure Provence magic. It’s also a great place to sip wine and pretend you’re a local. You can reach it in roughly 1h 15–1h 30 by car, depending on traffic.

Chamonix

Chamonix, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

If mountains are your happy place, Chamonix is calling. Ride a cable car up Mont Blanc or just cozy up in a café with hot chocolate and those views. Expect a longer trip—around 5 to 6 hours by car, or take a combination of train and bus (with transfers).

Marseille

Marseille, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Bustling, colorful, and right on the sea—Marseille has a little bit of everything. Don’t skip the fresh seafood or a boat ride out to the dreamy calanques. From La Penne you can drive in around 1h 10 to 1h 30, or take the train (depending on connections).

Paris

Paris, IDF, France

The City of Light is classic for a reason—croissants, the Eiffel Tower, and endless charming streets to get “lost” in. Travel from La Penne by train (TGV) would take about ~6 to 7 hours (with connections).

Milan

Milan, Lombardy, Italy

Fashion, aperitivo, and one jaw-dropping cathedral—Milan has serious style. Shop a little, sip a spritz, and soak in the Italian cool. From La Penne it’s a longer journey—around 4 to 5 hours by car, or you can opt for a train (with transfers) taking roughly 8 to 9 hours.
