Things To Do & Places To Eat

Zac created a great list of things to do in Bethel and the surrounding area. The first third are outdoor activities, the second third are indoor, and the last third are places to eat or drink!
Historic Sunday River Covered Bridge

Historic Sunday River Covered Bridge

Newry, ME 04261

Historic 1872 covered bridge turned iconic photo spot. Great for swimming, photos, and family outings. The venue of the last Wheeler wedding held in this town. Some say the sound of a dropped wedding ring still resounds off the rafters. Seriously worth a drive, and plan a swim if October weather is cooperative.

Grafton Notch State Park

Newry, ME 04261

Hike to Screw Auger Falls, Mother Walker Falls, Moose Cave, or Table Rock Trail for stunning mountain and waterfall views. These are all-day hikes and super approachable. Having dragged some tremendously grumpy 10-12-year-olds over and around these, I would recommend them to anyone who enjoys a brisk walk! Or, take a scenic 21‑mile drive through the heart of the Mahoosucs on Route 26.

Mount Will Walking Trail

1072 Mayville Rd, Bethel, ME 04217

Moderate 3.2‑mile loop with forest paths and sweeping views over Bethel and the Androscoggin Valley. Another beautiful and approachable day-hike. Plan a couple of hours for this one!

Valentine Farm & Bethel Community Forest

162 N Rd, Bethel, ME 04217

Scenic preserves with forest trails, wildlife spotting (moose, deer, birds), and peaceful walks. Ideal for families. The 3.4 mile trail system is accessible from downtown Bethel and is great for strollers, wheelchairs, and walkers. The area features a playground, picnic areas, and a miniature covered bridge.

Fall activities at Sunday River Ski Resort

Newry, ME

Summer and fall activities: Golf, gondola rides, zip lining, mountain biking, disc golf and more.

Maine Mineral and Gem Museum

99 Main Street, Bethel, ME 04217

World‑class geology museum with local minerals and meteorites (including moon and Mars specimens). Right in downtown.

The Gem Theater

48 Cross Street, Bethel, ME 04217

Charming historic movie theatre showing current films—cozy atmosphere and affordable fun. Are you picking up on a gem theme in this town?

Museums of the Bethel Historical Society

10 Broad Street, Bethel, ME 04217

Tour preserved historic homes and learn about local heritage, including 19th-century murals.

Gemini Cafe & Bakery

96 Main Street, Bethel, ME 04217

Cute downtown spot for breakfast and lunch in a former bank. Highly recommended!

Le Mu Eats

119 Main Street, Bethel, ME 04217

New-American meets Southeast Asian fusion cuisine. Seasonally varied menu and delicious food and drinks for the somewhat more adventurous palate.

Cho Sun

141 Main Street, Bethel, ME 04217

Casual-elegant South Korean and sushi bar. Delicious, with varied seating options including an outdoor deck, elevated dining room, and downstairs bar.

Sud's Pub

151 Main Street, Bethel, ME 04217

Local dive bar! It’s a dive bar in a basement, in a good way.
