Her Perspective: June 2024 was Luis’s first time in Puerto Rico, and in my mind it had to be perfect. I wanted him to see everything the mountains, the coast, the rainforest, the soul of the island so we booked multiple hotels and Airbnbs all around the island. Everywhere I went, people kept saying, “Ooooo, he’s going to propose,” and every time I laughed it off. No way. I would know. Luis can’t keep a secret, especially not something this big. There would be signs. What I didn’t know was that while I brushed off everyone’s suspicions, Luis was secretly working with a close friend to design a one-of-a-kind engagement ring with meaningful pieces from both his mother and mine. He was quietly setting dates to meet with my dad to ask for my hand in marriage and planning the perfect rooftop proposal without me suspecting a thing. When we landed in Puerto Rico, I broke a nail and Luis panicked, asking if we should go to a nail salon or get nail glue. I brushed it off , my nails didn’t matter, we were in Puerto Rico and I was too excited. Then I broke another nail, cut them all off, and while Luis was clearly stressed, I couldn’t have cared less. Fast forward to June 30, 2024, the night before my birthday. Luis told me we were driving across the island to a surprise stay. When we arrived and climbed the stairs to the rooftop, he opened the door and I was breathless. Mountains, rainforest, a glowing sunset, coquí frogs singing, an outdoor theater, hot tub, kitchen, and a dome where rose petals were laid out with a big sign that read LOVE. It was incredible, but I still thought it was just my birthday surprise. Luis made dinner reservations and told me to get ready. While I showered and did my hair and makeup, he was setting up a camera and a hidden GoPro. Before it got dark, he suggested we take pictures. He set the timer, and as we stood there smiling, I noticed he was shaking and sweating. When I asked if he was okay, he kissed me, dropped to one knee, pulled out the most beautiful ring I had ever seen, and asked, “Will you marry me?” Everything stopped. I hugged him, tears filling my eyes, and of course I said yes. His Perspective: From the moment we planned Puerto Rico, I knew this was it. What sealed it was her mindset she wanted me to see the entire island, not just the beaches but the heart of it. While she brushed off every comment about a proposal, I was quietly planning a moment that would change our lives forever. I worked in secret with a close friend to design a ring that blended both our worlds, carrying pieces from my mother and hers. I coordinated with her dad, asked for his blessing, and booked the perfect rooftop location, rehearsing everything in my head. She never suspected a thing. When she broke a nail, I panicked not because it mattered to her at that moment, but because I knew if she had known a proposal was coming she would’ve been in a full panic and had her nails done immediately. When she broke another and cut them all off, my stress doubled. June 30th arrived, the night before her birthday, and I drove her across the island to the surprise stay, my heart pounding. When I opened the rooftop door and saw her reaction, I knew it was worth it. While she got ready, I set up the tripod and hid a GoPro in a tree to capture the moment. Before it got dark, I suggested pictures. My hands were shaking, I was sweating, and she noticed. When she asked if I was okay, I kissed her, dropped to one knee, and asked her to marry me. The second she said yes, everything made sense the secrecy, the stress, the planning because I had just asked the love of my life to be mine forever. And through happy tears and laughter, the very first thing she said was, “Oh my God… I need to get my nails done!”
