Mike did a thing
Technically, Shonda and Mike went to the same high school, but let’s be clear: this was not one of those “we were best friends first” love stories. They were more like background characters in each other’s teenage memories. Mike remembers hearing Shonda’s laugh in the hallway, and Shonda remembers seeing Mike in the gym with his friends, cracking jokes with a pencil behind his ear like he was auditioning to be the main character in a 90s sitcom. Years later, Facebook did what Facebook does and brought them back into each other’s orbit. One day, Shonda posted about someone “shooting their shot” for a relationship and made it clear she was rooting for whoever tried, because according to her, they had no competition. Mike replied like he had jokes… and then proceeded to ignore her for two whole months. Thankfully, he eventually came to his senses. Once they finally got face to face, it felt like stepping right back into the 90s and going on a date with your high school crush. They talked, laughed, and connected so naturally that Shonda’s face was literally sore from smiling the next day. Moral of the story: sometimes shooting your shot comes with a wife.
In May 2026, Mike took Shonda out in Decatur, Georgia, and somehow managed to hide a whole proposal behind what looked like a regular date. On the drive there, he played nothing but 90s R&B love songs and wedding classics, which probably should have raised a few questions. But because this is Mike, Shonda just sang along like, “Okay, playlist!” Their first restaurant had a waitlist that Shonda was absolutely not interested in, so they ended up at Taqueria del Sol, a random Mexican spot in downtown Decatur. Somewhere between the food, the laughs, and the usual Mike-and-Shonda banter, the conversation circled back to Shonda’s last name, “Hiles.” Earlier that week, someone in a meeting kept calling her “Hills,” and Mike could not let it go. He kept saying he did not understand how people kept getting her name wrong. Then Shonda ate something spicy, needed water immediately, and Mike got up to help because the waitress was nowhere to be found. When he came back with the water and the waitress, Shonda was too busy drinking like she had just survived the desert to notice that Mike had a ring in his hand. Then he said, “Let’s stop the confusion with your last name and go ahead and change it to Gaines.” Mike got down on one knee, and Shonda did exactly what a completely shocked woman would do. She covered her face, cussed, cried, laughed, and forgot to actually answer the question. With strangers clapping and the waitress recording the whole thing, Mike had to ask again before Shonda finally said yes. And just like that, a random taco date turned into the beginning of forever.
