We first met at an Oasis party when studying at Texas A&M University back in Oct 2014. Since Yanhe was new to Texas A&M University, Chuanhong offered to show Yanhe around the campus. We talked a lot about our hobbies, worked on homework together, and explored new places around the city. We fell in love with each other in 1 month.
Chuanhong had to go back to China to finish his college on Jan 13, 2015, while Yanhe stayed at Texas A&M University to finish her master's degree, so we had to start our long-distance relationship since then. We had a deal before Chuanhong's departure: have one video call every day. Luckily, it worked out for us. Although we were physically far apart and experienced different days and nights, our hearts and thoughts didn't diverge. We became even more attracted to each other with both of our new growth.
Pursuing a PhD was challenging, and we were doing it in two different states: CA and WI. In the first year, there wasn't even a direct flight between San Francisco and Madison, so we had to commute for 10+ hours for each reunion. Sometimes we picked a third city and met there to save time. In the third year, United Airlines finally added a direct flight between these 2 cities, and we were so happy when learning this. In the fourth year, the pandemic hit, so everything went remote. Luckily, we were able to end our long-distance relationship earlier due to this. Yanhe moved to Chuanhong's place in Madison, WI and finished her PhD, then started her new job at Google remotely from there. Chuanhong finished his PhD and got a postdoc offer from UC Berkeley.
With the flexibility of their industry jobs, in the foreseeable future, Yanhe and Chuanhong will stay together forever (with Mulan 🐱, our cat baby adopted 1 year ago), happily ever after.
