How It All Began

Spring 2017

Woudu and Jamal's love story started at a boutique hotel in Chicago's Wicker Park. Jamal worked as a night manager there, but little did he know that his entire life would change when a young woman named Woudnesh Yilma came to work there. On her first day, she lost her keys and went to Jamal for help. The moment she saw him, she fell in love and from that day forward would find any reason to lose her keys so she could be closer to the man of her dreams. But on one memorable night, Woudu decided it was time to go beyond the keys, and have a longer chat with Jamal over a hot cup of coffee. They spoke for hours and quickly knew something was different. Their first attempt at a date happened a few days later when Jamal asked Woudu to join him at the Garfield Park Conservatory. She was super excited and even left her nursing school early to make it. But, here's the twist – Jamal’s overnight shifts got the best of him, and he ended up sleeping through their date, creating what's now one of their all-time favorite funny stories. Woudu thinking she had been stood up, turned to her friends for some comfort, and they decided to turn things around by taking her out for drinks. To add a bit of drama, the folks at the bar joined in with a playful, not-so-friendly, chant about Jamal. Meanwhile, Jamal woke up in a panic, realizing he'd missed a date with his dream girl. Woudu, with a nudge from her close friend Charlie, decided to give Jamal another shot. She invited him to join her that very night for a musical theater show and from that moment on, they were inseparable. Their story is living proof that sometimes, you just have to trust the journey and trust in love. Here's to forever!
