Having met online, Cameron and Sara’s first interaction centered around one of the greatest cinematic masterpieces of all time—Nicholas Cage’s National Treasure. Sara posted a simple sentence on her online dating profile: “Nick Cage deserved an Oscar for his performance in National Treasure”, to which Cameron replied “My mom would love you”. That’s right… that’s where this entire story started. This simple exchange humored Sara and eventually led to her first date with Cameron. They met at a popular Sushi restaurant in the Montrose district of downtown Houston. Cameron was intrigued by Sara’s charisma. She was outgoing, personable, and talkative. Some would call her the life of the party. Although Cameron was the exact opposite—a student in the middle of his PhD that spent most days alone proving theorems—Sara was captivated by his dry, witty sense of humor and taken aback by his genuine kindness. They talked for several hours that night until, eventually, the restaurant closed and they were forced to leave. Despite the strong initial connection they both felt, Cameron and Sara’s love did not come at first sight. Sara thought that Cameron seemed uninterested. Cameron worried that Sara was too much for him. After only three dates, the couple parted ways. Although they wouldn’t tell each other until much later, something about this decision made them both deeply uncomfortable. It was as though they had killed a flower before its bloom, creating for both of them a life in which the potential of something beautiful would remain forever unknown. Six months later, Cameron was sitting at his desk late on a Friday night. Although he didn’t go out much, he decided to meet a new colleague for a beer. Meanwhile, Sara had plans to meet her best friend, Ana, for dinner in the city. Cameron entered the room, ordered his drink, and starting talking. All was normal until—suddenly—someone yelled “Cameron!!”. Caught off guard, Cameron quickly turned his head to see Sara sitting only four feet away from him. Immediately, Sara and Cameron began to talk. Somehow, they both realized that this moment was a second chance to correct what would have been the biggest mistake of their lives. They have been inseparable ever since. Although some might write off Cameron and Sara’s love as pure luck, the chance of two people meeting randomly in a city as large as Houston is (roughly) 1:100,000,000. If you consider the fact that Sara was not living in Houston at the time and that Cameron had not left his house for months due to being busy with school, the chances are even slimmer. Fate is a more accurate characterization. Sure, some things are too good to be true. Sometimes, however, a lucky person—or people—will be given a chance to experience something that is too good not to be true. Sara and Cameron were given that chance.
