Bald Head Island

Bald Head Island is located at the southernmost tip of North Carolina where the Cape Fear river empties into the Atlantic Ocean. A 20-minute passenger ferry transports you from the ferry terminal at Deep Point Marina in historic Southport, N.C. to the harbor at Bald Head Island. In order to take in the full beauty and unique magic of Bald Head Island, we encourage all guests to spend the full week on the island. Popular activities during the day include hanging out on the beach, fishing, golfing, playing tennis, dining, shopping, climbing the lighthouse grounds, kayaking, sailing or canoeing and hiking the nature walks though the marshlands.

Travel By Air

Wilmington International Airport (ILM) is the closest airport to the island and is approximately a 40 minute drive to Deep Point Marina. Taxis, Uber, and rental car agencies are all available for transport from Wilmington International to Deep Point Marina. Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR) is 1.5 hours away from the marina and offers the same ground transportation as Wilmington airport. Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) is a 2.5 hour drive to the marina but has a larger selection of flights to chose from at a lower price.

Coming from the Raleigh area we recommend taking I-40 through Carolina Beach and catching the Fort Fisher Ferry to Southport Ferry. The ferry to Bald Head is immediately on your left as you exit the Southport Ferry facility.

You will leave your car at Deep Point Marina in Southport, NC before boarding the 20-minute ferry ride that will transport you from the ferry terminal to the harbor at Bald Head Island. We recommend arriving to the marina at least 30 minutes before your planned departure time so you have time to unload your luggage, park your vehicle and purchase your tickets. Please click on the website link below to view the ferry schedule. Ferries leave the mainland on the hour and the island on the half-hour, beginning at 7 A.M. The last ferry leaves Bald Head island at 11:30 P.M most nights. After the ferry, you'll catch a tram to your rental home. All trams are included with your ferry ticket. There are no vehicles on the island, so tram service is required for you to get between your rental and the ferry. Tram reservations can be made by calling 910.457.5006 and should be done as soon as you've booked your housing for the weekend. Although ferry tickets cannot be purchased in advance, you must book your tram tickets in advance. The tram will take you from the ferry to your rental and back to the ferry. These book quickly so plan to arrive at the ferry in time to buy a ferry ticket and book your tram tickets well in advance of your arrival.

The trams book quickly we recommend booking the tram to your rental and back to the ferry asap.

Travel By Golf Cart

The best thing about Bald Head Island is there are no cars on the island, only golf carts. Although most houses come with golf carts to use during your stay, golf carts and bikes can also be rented once you are on the island. If you’re coming to the island just for the day and won’t be needing tram service, you can rent a golf cart by the hour or by the day from Cary Cart Company's cart hut, located a short distance from the ferry landing across from Delphina Cantina. Advance reservations are recommended.

There are several vacation rental homes as well as a couple B&B's on Bald Head Island. We encourage you to book quickly so you have the best options available. If you would prefer to stay in a hotel, you'll need to stay in Southport which is the little town where you'll catch the ferry to the island. In addition to the rental agencies we've listed below, you can also search for properties on VRBO and Air BNB if you prefer. When booking, mention you're coming for a wedding as some agencies offer discounts for wedding groups. We also recommend that you purchase a temporary membership to either the Bald Head Island Club or the Shoals Club. These clubs offer wonderful dining options as well as pool, beach and golf facilities. You can only get temporary memberships to the club associated with your rental. Be sure to check your rental for the club available to access.
