Her Story

I’ll never forget the day I met Blake. I got his number at Thanksgiving two years ago, then two weeks later he set up our first date. Blake asked me to meet him at Kudu on a Sunday afternoon, one of our favorite coffee shops in Charleston. As crazy as it is, when I saw him I got all the butterflies and knew he was going to win me over really quick. He showed up with his big ole smile, introduced himself with a hug, and ordered what he said was the “best chocolate chip cookie in Charleston” (I’m still laughing at that statement... he had one bite of the cookie because of all the nerves). I immediately saw his big-kid heart. I was crushing hard over the hour conversation we had, I never remember a smile leaving either of our faces. When we were outside saying goodbye, I realized I had left my purse inside, naturally. When I ran inside to get it I saw some friends who I started telling all about the date. About 10 minutes or so later, they pointed to Blake standing outside looking through the window.. I had no idea he was still waiting on me! I was so embarrassed, but that was the first glimpse he got of my blonde shining through. After we left I texted my family and friends and said exactly, “I think I love him already,” and my family would say now “she wouldn’t shut the heck up about him.” Our first true date was at Leon’s oyster house 2 days later, where once again I realized I left my purse in the restaurant after we left. The biggest difference on this date was that Blake was stopped at a stop sign for at least 5 minutes because he was looking at me and thought it was a stop light. Needless to say, we were both pretty distracted. Our story doesn’t stop there, but this was our beginning and my favorite to tell! I didn’t know Blake at all, but I easily saw his generosity, love, and humor. He still never fails to keep that same smile on my face. Our relationship has many other stories just like our first dates, which is why I fell in love with Blake so fast!

His Story

My fourth year of medical school, late 2017, started with more questions than answers. It was the year I’d have to pick a specialty, take part of my board exams, and undergo The Match, which determines where I’d be living for the next 4 years, all while participating in clinical rotations, more studying, and trying to maintain a somewhat normal life. Needless to say, parts of my personal life felt like they were missing something. Relationships came and went but nothing felt true. A friend suggested I try a new dating app called Bumble, and said she’d even set it up for me. So I thought, what the hell, nothing else is working. At first, like all perceived notions of dating apps, it felt superficial and fleeting. I was at home in Spartanburg for fall break, relaxing on the couch watching a movie with my brother, Skylar, aimlessly swiping through Bumble when I came across a beautiful girl in powder blue dress, holding a smile from ear to ear, with striking green eyes and blonde curls. It didn’t take long to, as the kids say, “swipe right”. After getting to know each other by texting on the app, we’d decided to meet for coffee in December of 2017 at one of my favorite places, Kudu. It went better than I could have imagined. Coffee turned into dinner later that week, and following a brief two week hiatus while traveling for interviews, dinners turned into a trip to Beaufort and Beaufort turned into a trip to Asheville, and soon thereafter we were all in. I’d never met anyone like Kasey. She turned out to be the kindest, funniest, most caring, and beautiful person inside and out that I’d ever come across. Pretty soon I knew she was the person I was meant to spend the rest of my life with and two years later we’re ready to take that next big step!

The Proposal

Flash forward 2 years later.. November 29, 2019

Since Blake and I began dating he loved telling me that it would be 10 years before we got married. After 1 year passed on, I still had another 9 and by year 2, I was gonna have 8 more years (I knew this wasn't true, Blake grinned too big every time he said it so I just rolled with it). The day after Thanksgiving, Blake met me at the same cabin that my great grandmother, grandmother, mom, and aunt grew up in. We started walking over to my aunts farm so we wouldn't miss "sunset," but little did I know Blake was going to propose! I think I was the only one talking our entire walk over, I wondered why he was being so quiet... He was apparently repeating what he was going to say in his head over and over. I knew when he began to say he's always joked about making me wait 8 years, that it was the day I could finally say YES! Our families were watching with binoculars from the house and when we reached the end of the driveway they all ran out to celebrate! Blake and our family and friends made it the happiest and most special day ever! I always knew God placed us in each other's lives for a purpose. This is only part of our forever love story and one that I cannot wait to share with our kids one day!
