Things To Do

The Wedding Website of Hannah Wade and John Winkler
Tulum is an increasingly popular destination where the ancient and the modern world blend together, thanks to its unique combination of beautiful beaches, Mayan ruins, delicious cuisine, and relaxed bohemian atmosphere. This tropical paradise is located about an hour and a half South of Cancun, along Mexico’s Riviera Maya. You can’t visit Tulum, Mexico and not visit a cenote. The Tulum cenotes are natural limestone sinkholes that provide access to Mexico’s underground river system for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Some of the cenotes also include underwater archaeological sites and relics. With the Riviera Maya being home to the largest underground cave system in the world, connecting thousands of different cenotes, there are many beautiful underground caverns and caves to explore.
Dos Ojos Cenote

Dos Ojos Cenote

Q.R. 77774, Mexico

About 20 minutes northeast of Tulum is a pair of spectacular cenotes called Dos Ojos, or two eyes, which are highly regarded for their crystal-clear water. As such, they're a very popular scuba and snorkel spot — divers can even explore 1,300 feet of underwater passageways that connect the two cenotes. One is known as the "blue eye," as sunlight illuminates its blue waters, while the other is a cave known as the "black eye," and it requires flashlights or headlamps to explore.

Gran Cenote

Tulum, Q.R. 77796, Mexico

There's a good reason this cenote is called "grand" — it has immaculately clear waters, several chambers for exploration, and even some resident turtles. Located just outside of Tulum, this very popular cenote is great for the whole family. Be sure to bring goggles or snorkels to peer at underwater stalagmites, and don't forget to look up, where bats often dangle from stalactites.

Cenote Sac Actun

Q.R. 77764, Mexico

This is a cave diver’s dream because it’s the largest underwater cave system in the world. The cave system is about 226 miles long and around 390 feet deep. If you’re not a diver, you can still enjoy this cenote because it has vibrant turquoise water you can float in. The cave system has multiple cenotes connected to it, which makes cenote hopping easy.

Mayan Ruins of Coba

Mayan Ruins of Coba

77793 Coba, Quintana Roo, Mexico

About 45 minutes away from Tulum you’ll find Coba. Tall pyramids look out over the surrounding jungle. Once inhabited by almost 50,000 souls, these ruins date back to the Middle and Late Classic periods (500 to 900 AD) of the Mayan civilization. However, Coba has been inhabited as far back as 50 BC. One of the unique features of this Mayan site is the ability to actually climb the main pyramid — something you can’t do at other ruins.
