Lobster? Check. Ocean views? Check. Two lighthouses? Check. Check.
Check out Portland Head Light while getting a lobstah roll!
"The place for gourmands to savor artisan food paired with locally produced beer and craft cocktails. The farm-fresh dishes are infused with nostalgic American flavors [...]" I think the words used in this description tell you everything you need to know.
A great option near L.L Bean for awesome beer and wood-fired pizza.
A Portland brewery staple known for its unfiltered New England IPAs that are unapologetically hoppy, amongst a variety of other great beers. They have tasty pub food options as well.
Have you really been to Maine if you haven't hit up Beans? The L.L. Bean flagship store is located in Freeport - a town with numerous shopping and food options available. A 1 hr drive from Camp Mataponi. Do note - the L.L. Bean flagship store is currently under construction, but a temporary version is still open. The L.L. Bean Home store and the L.L. Bean Outlet are next door. There are also many other outlets also located in Freeport.
Maine's oldest lighthouse - and allegedly one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world.
A lovely area for a picnic, a stroll, and ocean views.
One of our favorite local beaches. In summer you often see sturgeon jumping, seals bobbing, and piping plovers being their cute little selves. Watch out for the seagulls, those cunning birds will steal your lobster roll before you've even seen them.
Rent a canoe or kayak and paddle the marsh. Be sure to give them a call to check availability and tides. There is also much birding to be done from here. Bonus points if you report back to Christian any wildlife that you encounter (extra bonus points if you demonstrate how it moved or replicate any sounds it made).
One of our favorite places for a seaside amble. Keep your eyes open for the resident summer osprey on the island. Bald eagles have also been seen on the shoreline alongside horseshoe crabs and striped bass. You may even spot a wild clammer!
One of our go-to quick, small, local hikes. There are multiple options for trails to make the experience as quick or lengthy as you'd like. Family friendly, great for beginner hikers. Just 12 minutes from the Freeport Outlets! 50 minutes from Camp Mataponi.
Lauren's favorite local mountain. A great option for at least moderately experienced hikers and those like us that are always looking to burn some energy! 30 minutes from Camp Mataponi.
Extending your trip in Maine? Acadia is a great choice. A national park with plenty of gorgeous scenery ~3 hrs from Portland.
Enjoy daytime scenic cruises or live band evening cruises on a 93 ft paddle wheel ship.
