William and I have been to Shenandoah National Park several times and fall more in love each time. No matter the season it is beautiful, but in fall the leaves truly make it a magical experience! Skyline Drive is just over 100 miles long so it feels like it is a never ending playground of exploration! With hundreds, if not thousands, of various trails of all skill levels, this is not to be missed! We recommend getting up early to beat the crowd. It is about 1 hr away from where accomodations for the weekend will be held!
Great Country Farms is a great place to experience the joys of picking apples right off the orchard! They have multiple varieties of apples and tons of fun things activities for kids. You can also pick pumpkins, enjoy a corn maze, get fresh hot cider and baked goods in the market as well. On the same property is Henway ciders which is a great place to enjoy a local hard cider or beer. This is about a 25 minute drive from where the accommodations for the weekend will be held.
William and I love to go chasing waterfalls and if you know anything about me (Alli), you know I am OBSESSED to my core with them. If you too love waterfalls, spectacular views and history, Great Falls should be at the top of your list! This is about a 50 minute drive from where the accommodations for the weekend will be held.
Yes, another waterfall recommendation, because I love 'em and just can't help myself. Cunningham Falls State Park is adjacent to Cactoctin Mountain Park (which is also beautiful!) You can drive right up to parking for the waterfall and follow the path about 1-2 minutes to see it or park at the Cactoctin Mountain Visitor Center for an easy-moderated hike that takes about 1ish hours to complete. This is about a 50 minute drive from where the accommodations for the weekend will be held.
While William and I haven't spent much time in Harper's Ferry we have heard amazing things! It is rich with history, a national park, museums and local restaurants. From google: "Harpers Ferry is a town in West Virginia. Paths wind through Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, which has 19th-century buildings, a Civil War Museum and John Brown’s Fort, a key site in an 1859 abolitionist raid. The location where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet, known as The Point, offers views of Maryland and Virginia. The Appalachian Trail Visitor Center has exhibits on the long-distance hiking trail." This is about a 15 minute drive from where accommodations for the weekend will be held.
William and I have been to Frederick a couple times but haven't gotten a chance to spend much time here yet! The streets are lined with adorable small businesses, restaurants, coffee shops and cafes, old homes and is rich in history. There is an amazing donut shop called 'Glory Donuts' and we HIGHLY recommend it for a donut run as well as brunch! (Attaching their address to this as that would be a fun place to start your exploration!) Here is some more info about Frederick from google: "It’s home to the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, with immersive exhibits on battlefield medical care. The Schifferstadt Architectural Museum is a 1750s German colonial house with a heritage garden. Rose Hill Manor Park & Museums includes a manor house, a log cabin and a children’s museum. To the northwest, Gambrill State Park offers mountain trails and overlooks."
