On the morning of May 6th, 2022, under the guise of "taking pictures on the beach" of Maui, Nick programmed a drone to catch the footage of him popping the question!
Anytime somebody hears that Nick and Katie met in middle school, they quickly assume they were “high school sweethearts” who’ve been together since, but the truth is no one could have predicted how this love story played out: Nick and Katie met back in their 6th grade homeroom. While Katie wrote in her diary that she "kinda liked Nick Wilk" because he was "kinda cute and funny," she never shared her feelings. They shared classes and groups of friends through the years, always remaining just friends. In a last ditch attempt at romance, Nick left a heartfelt note in Katie's senior yearbook, which led to a conversation on their Facebook "walls" that actually ended in Nick saying "just be my wife" (June 2010). They went to different colleges and lost touch for almost seven years. In May of 2017, while on a trip to visit a friend and apply for jobs in Charlotte, North Carolina, Katie posted on Instagram from a location in the city. Nick happened to be completing a summer internship in Charlotte at the very same time. So, Nick did what any millennial would do - slid into those DMs (that’s Direct Messages for the non-tech-savvy folk). He asked Katie to meet up after work at an Irish pub. They had a great time together catching each other up on their lives, laughing about the past and cherishing old memories. Afterward they said goodbyes and went separate ways, and while both enjoyed each other’s company, neither knew what to make of the encounter and what the future may hold. Luckily for Nick, Katie could not remember where she parked her car and couldn’t think of anything else to do but call him for help. Together, they scoured the streets of Charlotte for almost an hour, looking up and down every block for any context clues that might tip Katie off to remembering the location, laughing and joking the entire time. When the car was finally found, neither really wanted the day to end, and thus the smallest flame of what would be a beautiful relationship was ignited, all thanks to a bold message, a spinach artichoke dip, and a city layout just confusing enough for a love to be born. Katie ended up taking a job in Charlotte and moving there that summer, while Nick moved back to Jersey City to complete the final semester of his Master’s. They kept in close touch, and Nick even came for a fun-filled visit in the fall of that year. He was soon offered a permanent position where he had interned in Charlotte, and moved down in February. It only took a few dates for them to make the relationship official on Aprils Fools Day, 2018. Since that fateful day, Nick’s work has brought the future Wilks from Charlotte to Newport Beach, California where they spent two years. While the beaches and weather were beautiful, a strong desire to set down roots near family and lifelong friends brought them back to the East coast where they reside in Jersey City just outside of Manhattan. They cannot wait to celebrate their love with all of their closest family and friends.
