No! Puerto Rico is a US territory, so no passport is needed if you are a US citizen (the majority of you!). Non-US citizens will need passports and potentially visas for travel to the US. This only applies to a few people and we think you all know how to handle your individual cases.
Admittedly, after spending this year as digital nomads bouncing around the world (and seeing many of you!), deciding on a location for our wedding was difficult. Both of us have spent the better part of the past couple of decades living in the Caribbean (in St. Thomas: Steph for 7 years, Mike for 10) and Latin America (Steph in Peru and Colombia for 4 years, Mike in Honduras and Colombia for 6 years). We have both traveled to Puerto Rico more times than we can count. It's a great mix between Latin America and the Caribbean. We love the culture, music, language, architecture (especially in Old San Juan), natural beauty, and the general vibes of a weekend there. Couple those things with the relative ease of traveling there from the US (the fact that it can handle visitors, most people speak English, lots of direct flights, no passports required for US citizens) and it just makes sense for us. We're so excited to share a weekend there with our favorite people. Whether it's your first time experiencing PR, or your 50th (or if you live there!), we think it will be a blast.
The most popular time to visit the Caribbean (coolest temperature-wise with the least amount of rainfall) is from December to March, so early April is right on the fringe for that weather. It will likely be hot during the day and "cool off" at night. Historically, highs have been in the mid-80s and lows in the mid- to low-70s. Please plan accordingly, especially for attire for the wedding ceremony and reception, which are completely outdoors.
We aren't security experts, but we have felt safe traveling there. As always when traveling to a new place you don't know as a tourist, we recommend keeping a low profile in public places, don't carry all of your valuables with you, and be courteous to the people you encounter.
