Some couples have perfect timing. Then there’s our love story. Once upon a time (also known as early 2020), two people matched with a single swipe. Katie insists it was her very first match. Our first date was all set … until a global plot twist paused the story. Katie had to cancel because her brother was sick, and we were both (rightfully) a little nervous about COVID. For more than a year, our connection grew through virtual aquarium tours, online games, and Zoom dates. When we finally had our first real date after getting vaccinated, everything just clicked. Our second date involved whale watching and live music with friends, which would prove to be a perfect prologue to the adventure we’re on together now.

The proposal plan went through a few evolutions before the big moment. Andy’s original idea was to pop the question during a behind-the-scenes encounter with the seals at the LA Zoo—a nod to Katie’s favorite animal, Walnut, and her time working there. But after picturing the reality of damp, fishy air and dim lighting, romance took a back seat to practicality. The next idea was a romantic morning proposal at home before the zoo. We’d still be able to celebrate with Katie’s coworkers afterward. However, Katie is not a morning person, so that idea swam away too. With the zoo (and early mornings) off the table, Andy decided to bring the magic home. He carefully set the scene in their apartment, decorating the den and telling Katie there was not one item in the known universe that would excuse her opening the pocket door to our den when she was done getting ready for dinner. Despite that, she was somehow still surprised. When the moment finally came, it was quiet, meaningful, and shared with our pup, Gemma. After she said yes, Katie spent the entire car ride to dinner FaceTiming loved ones, sharing the happy news.
