How We MetHow We Met

First came College, then Marriage

Hello, and welcome! We are the Chapnkems, and we’re so glad you’ve stopped by. This website offers a little glimpse into our world — our passions, projects, and the things that bring us joy. Mado & Wency’s love story began in 1996. Here’s how it all started: On a beautiful Wednesday afternoon in 1996, around 4:15 pm, Wency was walking along the street leading to the University of Buea campus when he caught sight of a beautiful dark-skinned lady across the street, accompanied by a friend named Quinta. Without hesitation, Wency bravely walked over to her and offered to buy two sachets of "groundnut sweet" (peanut candy) for her and her friend. He then asked for her home address — but unfortunately, he was given the wrong one. Despite his efforts, he visited the address several times, only to be told that no one by that name lived there. Determined not to give up, Wency switched tactics and decided to follow her home after school. His persistence paid off, and a few weeks later, Mado and Wency fell in love. The rest, as they say, is history. Now, almost 30 years later, Mado and Wency are happily together, blessed with four wonderful children: three girls and a boy. Throughout their journey, they’ve been passionate about helping others and ensuring the comfort and well-being of those around them. Giving back to their community through creating jobs, sponsoring children in school, and supporting the less privileged has always been at the heart of how they approach life.

The ProposalThe Proposal

Wency's proposal to Mado is certainly bold and straightforward, reflecting a deep sense of confidence and determination. The way he approached Mado, not waiting for a formal dating stage but instead walking into her apartment and directly declaring, “A cam na for tell you say, you bi ma woman,” is a strikingly candid and genuine gesture of his intentions. This kind of approach highlights a unique cultural blend of boldness and clarity, where the lines of communication are transparent and direct. It seems their relationship was rooted in a strong sense of commitment from the very beginning, and Mado, while initially caught off guard, must have been moved by his sincerity and resolute feelings. Starting a journey together from such a pivotal moment speaks volumes about the power of honesty and clarity in relationships. The simplicity and confidence in Wency’s words — essentially stating, “You are my woman” — can be seen as an affirmation of love and intention, with no need for pretenses or delays. It’s no wonder that their relationship has stood the test of time, continuing until today.
