International Travelers… Please make sure to secure your passports ASAP! US passport processing times are extremely long right now and there might be additional backlog from any government shutdown and the holiday season. Double check that your passport expiration date is more than 6 months after you plan to depart from the UK/Europe. Visas: Starting in late 2023, US and EU passport holders will be required to get an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to travel to the UK. Flight
London Heathrow Terminal 5 (British Airways, American Airlines) is optimally located for Petersfield, being on the western side of the airport with good transport links to the wedding venue. However, this is far from essential – other terminals/Gatwick airport is fine – particularly if travelling into London before heading out to Petersfield.
Travel Note
If travelling into London first, we strongly recommend not hiring ("renting" for Americans) a car for this purpose; central London is a very expensive place to drive (congestion charge, low emissions charge and parking are all crazily costly). There is a regular underground train service (The Tube) into London and also an overland train service (the faster but more expensive Heathrow Express). If you do head into London first, Petersfield can easily be accessed from central London. Trains run every 30 minutes from Waterloo station and take just over an hour. From Petersfield station you can pick up a taxi from the station to The Tithe Barn (or your accommodation), the journey takes about 15 minutes. However, you can avoid London completely by catching the number 9 bus that leaves directly outside terminal 5 exit. This bus will take you to either Woking or Guildford railway stations where you can catch a direct train to Petersfield. If you wish to hire (rent) a car for your trip, we would recommend Kendall Cars. With prior booking, Kendall’s will meet you in the arrivals hall at Heathrow and drive you to one of their four rental locations (between 10 & 20 miles from Heathrow, but helpfully all in the general direction of Petersfield). https://www.kendallcars.com/airports
Flight
We love TAP Portugal’s Stopover program. TAP’s flights are some of the better prices for traveling from DC-area to London. All TAP flights connect through Portugal, but by booking directly on their website you can add a free “stopover” layover up to 10 days in Portugal to add another country to your trip! We spent 4 days in Lisbon in summer 2023 and loved the palaces/castles in Sintra and the Torre de Belem tower.

East Meon is a beautiful village 10 minutes drive from Petersfield and 20 minutes drive from The Tithe Barn. The George is one of our favourite pubs in the area and has 5 pleasant bedrooms. South Harting is a small pretty village 3 minutes drive (1.7miles) from the Tithe Barn, and 10 minutes drive from Petersfield. The White Hart is an attractive old village inn. Only 5 of its 8 rooms are now available for the night of the wedding, but you could book breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea there for about 35 guests if you’d like to gather together as a group (these would need to be pre-booked) . You would need to contact them directly to organise rooms or any group bookings.

If ‘character’ is what you’re after, Langrish House has it in spades! It is privately owned by a wonderful couple who are are as about as English as you can get; I think Nigel Talbot-Ponsonby (I promise you this is not a Monty Python sketch!) is a distant relative to the Royal Family and has the voice to go with it. The house definitely has its charms and a fascinating history; you’ll be made very welcome. But with its creaking floor-boards and décor that has seen better days the house has a slightly faded glory feel to it. It is convenient for the Tithe Barn (a 20min drive) and is run on a bed and breakfast basis, so you would need to find somewhere else to eat other meals; the above mentioned Ye Olde George Inn is a mile or so down the road and does excellent meals. This is a luxury spa hotel – though rooms can be booked independently of the spa. It’s situation is secluded & rather lovely, although a 20 min drive from the Tithe Barn, and a 6 minute drive from Liphook Station (20 minutes from Petersfield station)

This is the largest hotel in the area. It classifies itself as a resort hotel and in our view lacks personality but has comfortable rooms and additional facilities such as an 18 hole golf course, spa, swimming pool etc. It is further away from The Tithe Barn (20 minutes' drive), but is still accessible on the rail network via Liphook station (15 minute drive). It would make a good base for exploring the area, and with London only an hour away by train you can avoid paying the much higher hotel costs if you’d be prepared to put up with the commute! We are not holding any rooms here, so please book via attached website.
