On Saturday January 13th 2018, two souls born on different continents met in the gallery of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture located in Harlem. It was the 6th annual Black Comic Book Festival where a potential transaction sparked a chain reaction. Kadiatou Coulibaly met Kamau Ware and a Black Diasporic love story was born. A common interest in the cultures and politics of the continent merged into nerding out on comics and hip-hop. They found the reception of the Black Panther film an apt metaphor for the bridging of African American and African cultures seeded a century ago in the same neighborhood they first met. They didn’t know then but soon discovered the oasis they were for each other. In January 2018, Kadiatou and Kamau were deep in the process of redefinition that became animated by exploring a love that led to deeper discoveries of themselves and each other. Magic crept up on these two as did the healing inspired by a connection neither knew was possible. On Thursday December 21st 2023, two souls agreed to celebrate the universe they had become and committed to making a world together. It was the first day of winter, on the historic Wavertree ship in the Seaport District of Manhattan - the backdrop to their courtship. They return to the place of their engagement on Saturday August 24th 2024 to celebrate their union among beloved family and friends.
