We had known each other for about a year. We hadn't exchanged information, didn't have each other's phone number, yet always seemed to accidentally run into one another on the beach or around the small beach town we both lived in. Nick was an Uber driver, and just by chance he picked me up one night on the way to a friend's house. I was feeling brave, and at the end of the ride I suggested we exchange numbers so we could actually plan to see each other on purpose one day. Only a few days later, our first date began with us both recommending the same hike to the same beach, at the same time! We stepped out onto the path together that day, hopeful and excited, but completely unaware of the incredible journey we were about to begin.
We were gazing over the ruins at Machu Picchu, watching the morning fog lift from the mountain top, when Nick suggested we take a picture together. As we got ready for the shot, Nick turned to me, and in that moment I knew something big was about to happen. If you know Nick, you know it's difficult for him to contain himself when he has big news. As he got down on one knee, I felt like I was in a dream. All of the sounds and sights faded away, even what Nick was saying to me! I hope he didn't work too hard on his speech, because I barely heard a word of it. I was so overwhelmed, I could barely speak. When he had finished, I dropped down to my knees, looked him in the eye, and said "of course!"
