Probably not. In fact you're much more likely to get robbed in Times Square than in Dumbo or Greenpoint.
It's up to you - however, we wouldn't. Times Square is a great place to see for 30 seconds and then leave immediately - everything is extremely overpriced including accommodation, food and drink. The great thing about NYC is nothing takes more than 30 minutes on the subway.
Don't drive, get an Uber, Lyft or Yellow Cab. If you haven't used Lyft before, it's the same as Uber, so compare prices!
Yes, the Subway is great! It is safe, cheap and runs 24/7. We recommend getting a weekly pass if you're here for a couple of days, otherwise you will get charged per ride. There are no zones, so you can ride from Harlem to Queens for the same price!
Customary to tip $1/standard drink (wine, beer) if you're sat at a bar, and between 15-20% if having food. You do NOT have to tip more than 20% EVER (unless you think the service was INSANELY good), we generally tip 18% for meals. In a Yellow Cab, they often only give you options of 20+%, you DO NOT have to tip this much.
September is typically hot & humid (for English people, not Aussies). It will likely be 30+ degrees most days so pack the shorts and sunscreen.
No. Unless they're over 18 and invited.
Yes (unless you are American). Apply for your ESTA with plenty of time to spare - https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/
It's going to be 30 degrees (80F). While the dress code is smart casual - keep this in mind! Leave the top hat at home.
While people get stressed about travelling overseas, there are SO many hotels in NYC that you will find somewhere to stay. We recommend at least a month before the wedding.
No. Traffic is awful. Parking is awful. Public transport is great.
No. Our wedding is in Greenpoint, Brooklyn - getting back to Jersey that night will be expensive and long.
Brooklyn is enormous - more people live here than Chicago, don't expect to get off the subway at the 'Brooklyn' stop. There are lots of great places to visit in the 'Things to Do' section on this site.
No. It probably is.
We recommend hotels over AirBnB - while there are great options we have heard some horror stories of last minute cancellations as there are very strict regulations in New York.
We can't accommodate everyone, but due to some people's Covid concerns and travel hesitation we're anticipating having some extra seats available, so text us and we can chat about it :)
