How We Met

"If there's a next time..."

Varun's perspective: "Like any modern romance, our relationship started with a swipe. It was a Midwestern summer day, where the sky was a radiant blue and the breeze brushed ever so slightly against one's skin. I was informed earlier in the day that I would be relocating from my homestead in Cincinnati, Ohio to the historical and beautiful Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As a single male in his early 20s, I did what all other kids do—I switched my Tinder location. After a few swipes, I came across an interesting profile. The first thing that caught my attention were her eyes, drawing me in instantly. Her bio was simple, “I need a plus-one for a wedding in August.” As luck would have it, so did I (but for a much later date). With a swift movement of my finger, I swiped right. After a long move (and a tough application process, thanks to Priyal’s background questions), we finally met up for Date 1. Our first date turned into a 6-hour evening, where we really got to know each other. At the end of the night, I realized I had met someone incredibly special. Rather than waiting the customary three days to reach out to her, I texted her that night to ask her out again. It turned out to be the best decision of my life. Fast-forward 5 years and some months later, I’m getting married to the girl who was unknowingly looking for her forever plus-one.” -- Priyal's perspective: "It was the summer of 2017. I was single, but not at all ready to mingle. My co-worker at Anthropologie invited me to her wedding and demanded I bring a plus-one. Not wanting to disappoint, I decided to make a bit of a game out of it - as an avid watcher of the show, The Bachelorette, I thought—maybe it’s my turn? After several dates, I selected the top three guys that were all local to Philadelphia….and then a random guy who was living in Ohio showed up on my screen. After analyzing his profile, I thought to myself, “He seems cute…although his ‘Saturdays are for the Hoosiers’ shirt should have been a glaring red flag.” Even so, I swiped right and got a match. He messaged me a little too quickly, but was eager to be my plus-one. I soon learned he would be moving to Philadelphia, so I added his name to the pool and started the competition. I had already had 3 fun dates, so my expectations were pretty low for this Ohio guy moving to Philly. The weekend he moved, he asked me to dinner and I was shocked he wanted to meet up for dinner at 6pm on a Saturday. I got dressed and showed up to Distrito in University City and saw him in a strawberry shirt, waiting for me. We talked for a long time and after leaving the restaurant, we got wine and gelato. Once the night was over, I knew I had found my date. When he texted me about his plans for our next date, I didn’t want to be too excited—so I simply replied, "If there's a next time…”. Little did I know, that plus-one would become my fiancé. From the boy in the strawberry shirt to the man he is today, I am so excited to be marrying my best friend!”
