It was the Summer of 2017 when Florencia and Matthijs met in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was doing a 6-month research internship at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital as part of his training in the Netherlands to become a pharmacist. She was a pediatric surgeon from Argentina, looking to acquire new knowledge in the field of fetal surgery. Indeed, although you quite possibly have never heard of Cincinnati before, it is a true magnet for all different kinds of medical professionals across the world. These international visitors often come together in the city’s many bars and restaurants. It was at the rooftop bar of the Rhinegeist Brewery where Florencia and Matthijs first met. It was a hot day, close to 40°C, although it felt like 1000°C in the burning Midwestern sun. Argentinian Florencia was sporting Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses and holding up considerably better than Dutch Matthijs in the heat. He was enchanted by fact he couldn’t see her eyes in those dark sunglasses. Later, with the setting sun, their eyes locked and they knew this was the start of something. And so it was. Now, 5 years later, they are getting married. They will be joined by their Argentinian-Dutch baby boy. People say Paris is the city of love, but have you been to Cincinnati?
