We met on our summer vacations in the south of Spain in 2019. I (Valentina) went on vacation across Italy with my family and then decided to visit my friends Paloma and Clara in Spain for the rest of the summer. While visiting Paloma, we went to her summer place in Marbella and there I met some of her lifelong summer friends, one of them being Ale. We bonded over going to college in the US, and having gone to boarding school in the Northeast and then spent the night dancing at Starlite. After that we saw each other again in Boston (September 2019 and March 2020) and New York City (February 2020), and then spent 24/7 virtually together during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic until I could visit Ale in July 2020, when we officially started dating. After that, we started a long-distance relationship. Throughout my senior year, I hopped back and forth between Boston and Barcelona and then after graduating in May 2021, I moved overseas and we set up our first home together in Barcelona. We enjoyed a wonderful two years there, until I moved back to Boston for medical school this past summer. We are now looking forward to living our next adventure as a married couple in Boston as we both grow personally and professionally together.

Nos conocimos en nuestras vacaciones de verano en el sur de España en 2019. Yo (Valentina) me fui de vacaciones por Italia con mi familia y luego decidí visitar a mis amigas Paloma y Clara en España durante el resto del verano. Mientras visitaba a Paloma, fuimos a su lugar de veraneo en Marbella y allí conocí a algunos de sus amigos de verano de toda la vida, uno de ellos Ale. Congeniamos por haber ido a la universidad en EE.UU., y por haber ido a un colegio en el noreste de EEUU (cerca de Boston) y luego pasamos la noche bailando en Starlite. Después de eso nos volvimos a ver en Boston (septiembre de 2019 y marzo de 2020) y Nueva York (febrero de 2020), y luego pasamos 24/7 virtualmente juntos durante los días de confinamiento por la pandemia de COVID-19 hasta que pude visitar a Ale en julio de 2020, cuando empezamos a salir oficialmente. Después de esto, empezamos una relación a distancia. A lo largo de mi último año de carrera, estuve yendo y viniendo desde Boston a Barcelona, y una vez me gradué en mayo de 2021, me mudé a Barcelona y empezamos a vivir juntos. Disfrutamos dos años maravillosos ahí, hasta que me tuve que mudar de vuelta a Boston este verano pasado para continuar con la carrera de medicina. Ahora estamos deseando vivir nuestra próxima aventura como matrimonio en Boston a la vez que crecemos juntos personal y profesionalmente.

The Bahamas has always been a special place for me and we are very lucky to be able to spend every summer there with my family. This past summer was no different, except for a "small" detail... Ale proposed! The day after we arrived my mom told me that she had made a reservation for dinner at Nobu and to be ready for a car to pick us up at 8pm. Naturally, I got ready and put on my favorite new dress of the summer and came downstairs at that time. For those of you who don't know my family very well, we are usually running 5-10 minutes late so I was a little surprised when I came down stairs and everyone was sitting in the living room ready. Here, I started to be a little suspicious. Ale then told me that the taxi was running a little late, and asked if I wanted to go on a walk along the beach while we waited and so we went outside and walked to the shoreline. While we were walking I could tell something was up because he was acting very nervous and even shaking a little. As we walked he told me how much he loves me and how much he loved being there spending quality time with me and my family. Once we got to the shoreline, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Everything after that is a little bit of a blur for me, I know I jumped on him and started crying of happiness and of course said yes. We looked back to the house and my family (and the neighbors who happened to be outside started cheering). We then popped a bottle of champagne and continued the celebration at my favorite restaurant. The taxi and reservation had in fact been made for half an hour later of what I was originally told.

Las Bahamas siempre han sido un lugar especial para mí y tenemos mucha suerte de poder pasar allí todos los veranos con mi familia. Este verano pasado no fue diferente, excepto por un "pequeño" detalle... ¡Ale me propuso matrimonio! Al día siguiente de llegar, mi madre me dijo que había reservado para cenar en Nobu (mi restaurante favorito) y que estuviera preparada para que un coche nos recogiera a las 8 de la tarde. Naturalmente, me preparé y me puse mi vestido nuevo favorito del verano y bajé a esa hora. Para los que no conozcáis bien a mi familia, solemos llegar entre 5 y 10 minutos tarde a todo, así que me sorprendí un poco cuando bajé las escaleras y todos estaban sentados en el salón preparados. Aquí empecé a sospechar un poco. Ale entonces me dijo que el taxi iba un poco tarde, y me preguntó si quería ir a dar un paseo por la playa mientras esperábamos, así que salimos y caminamos a la orilla del mar. Mientras caminábamos me di cuenta de que algo pasaba porque estaba muy nervioso e incluso temblaba un poco. Mientrastanto, me decía lo mucho que me quería y lo mucho que le gustaba pasar tiempo conmigo y con mi familia. Cuando llegamos a la orilla, se arrodilló y me pidió que me casara con él. Todo lo que pasó después lo tengo un poco borroso, pero sé que me abalancé sobre él y empecé a llorar de felicidad y, por supuesto, le dije que sí. Miramos hacia la casa y mi familia (y los vecinos, que justo estaban en la terraza) empezaron a gritar y celebrar. Después descorchamos una botella de champán y continuamos la celebración en mi restaurante favorito. De hecho, el taxi y la reserva se habían hecho para media hora más tarde de lo que me habían dicho en un principio.
