Travel Note

Travel Notes

We are so excited to welcome you all to Ireland! We know that planning a trip like this can feel a bit overwhelming, so we’ve put together as many travel options as possible. That said, we completely understand that you may still have questions or need a little extra help, and we’re more than happy to assist. Also please note, we do recommend booking your accommodations as soon as your travel dates are confirmed, as September is a busy season in Kerry.

Flight

Shannon Airport

Shannon will be the closest airport for a DIRECT flight from the US (about 2.5 hour drive to/from Killarney)

Flight

Kerry Airport

If you're not renting a car, you can take a connecting flight from Shannon, Dublin, or other major European airports to Kerry Airport, located in Killarney.

Flight

Dublin Airport

We know many of you will be stopping in Dublin. Keep in mind that the drive to/from Killarney takes approximately 4 to 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train or a Ryanair flight. See details below.

Rental Car

Airport Pickup

While a car is the most convenient way to get around, it's important to keep in mind that Ireland's roads can be quite narrow and winding. Additionally, driving is on the opposite side compared to the U.S., which may take some getting used to. If you're not comfortable with this, we recommend skipping the rental car. For those who do choose to rent one, the best option is to pick it up at the airport where you arrive. Most big travel credit cards usually cover the Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), also called the Loss Damage Waiver, which can save you some money on your rental. In Ireland though, rental companies are very strict about proof. You’ll need a letter from your credit card company that shows your name, specifically lists Ireland as covered, and is dated within 30 days of your trip. The good news is, it’s usually easy to get—just call your card company, tell them you’re renting a car in Ireland, and they’ll email you the letter. Make sure to save it to your phone or laptop, as the rental desk may ask to see it.
