FAQs

We've put together some helpful information for all our guests, with a few extra details for those travelling from further afield. If you have any questions we haven't covered, don't hesitate to reach out.
Question

Visa & Passport

Answer

Requirements vary by nationality, so we recommend checking your specific details before you travel. For most guests, the following applies: Passport Validity: Should be valid for 30 days beyond your planned exit date. Blank Passport Pages: 2 consecutive empty visa pages per entry (not including endorsement pages). Tourist Visa: Not required if visiting for 90 days or less. Important for travelling with children: Generally, an unabridged birth certificate showing both parents' details is required (or parental consent affidavit if there's only one parent travelling).

Question

Children

Answer

We would love for your little ones to join us after the ceremony for cocktail hour on the lawns – music, snacks, and games as the African sun sets. For the reception meal itself, we'll be in touch to work out what suits everyone best. (Please also check special visa requirements for travelling with kids above).

Question

Currency & Tipping

Answer

The currency is the South African Rand (ZAR). Exchange rates generally favour travellers! Tipping for good service (10% minimum) is standard in restaurants and bars. While card payments are widely accepted (MasterCard/Visa preferred), having cash is always handy. ATMs are available, however we recommend withdrawing some cash on arrival. Tip for parking attendants (car guards): It’s customary to tip a small amount (around R5-R10).

Question

Driving

Answer

If you’re renting a car in Cape Town: South Africans drive on the left side (like the UK). Seatbelts are mandatory; using a mobile phone while driving is illegal. At some intersections, lights might be out due to power outages. Treat these as 4-way stops.

Question

Connectivity & SIM Cards

Answer

You’ll find Wi-Fi in most places (restaurants, hotels), but for on-the-go data, you may want a local SIM card or a roaming package from your provider. Local SIMs are available in the arrivals hall at Cape Town Airport – just bring your passport. We use an e-SIM from the provider Airalo, which is best set up when you're still at home.

Question

Weather

Answer

April marks Autumn in South Africa. Most days are mild, but it can be windy, and evenings tend to be cooler. We might also get a bit of rain. We suggest bringing a light jacket or scarf for when the sun goes down.

Question

Plugs

Answer

South Africa uses plug types C, D, M, and N, with round pins in triangular pattern. UK/UAE plugs don’t fit directly, so you’ll need an adapter, available at the airport or local stores.

Question

Safety

Answer

South Africa has a reputation for crime, so we’re here to help guide you on staying safe. Cape Town is safer than many parts of the country, but you need to stay aware. Tourist areas (city centre, Cape Winelands, Garden Route) are generally safe, especially in daylight. Safety Tips: • Avoid walking at night. • Keep valuables secure and close but preferably at home. • Use Uber Premium (not street taxis). • Never leave belongings visible in your car. • Keep windows rolled up at busy intersections and avoid talking to strangers at traffic lights. • Avoid public transport (trains/buses); rather use Uber or drive a rental car. • Hike in groups of 3+ without valuables, with water, snacks, and a charged phone and preferably with a local (guide).

Question

Gifts

Answer

Your presence at our wedding means the world to us – truly, that is more than enough. If you do wish to give a gift, a contribution towards a future trip as a married couple would be gratefully received.
