We are so excited to welcome you to the St Lawrence River and Manzanita Island. The St Lawrence Seaway is a system of locks and channels in Canada and the United States flowing a little over 400 miles from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. It is also home to a section of the river known as the Thousand Islands, the native tribes of Iroquois and Ojibwa called this area “Manitouana” translated to the “Garden of the Great Spirit”. It has been a summer destination for many families who have been building homes on these islands since the 1800’s, including Manzanita Island. Tucker’s great, great, Grandfather, James Knap, enjoyed camping on an Island in Chippewa Bay for years before he decided to purchase the land in 1886. He modeled the build after a home in Pasadena, CA and even named the Island “Manzanita” after an evergreen shrub commonly found in the area. Construction began in 1887 and was concluded in the early summer of 1888. Since that time his progeny has maintained the property, built an additional home north east corner of the Island to accommodate their growing family, witnessed endless sunsets from the front porch, hosted seven weddings including those of Andy and Susan Gustafson (1982), Emily and Daniel Crowder (2013), Amelia and Jon Giles (2019). We are overjoyed to share this special part of our family and add to the history of Manzanita with you for Tucker and Tori’s wedding on August 31st, 2025.
