We went to a popular Yayoi Kusama “infinity room” exhibit that both of us had been dying to see at The Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH). After the museum, we spent hours getting to know each other over dinner at Hearsay Downtown.
Throughout our nearly 2 years of dating, Boye and I went to museums both in the US and Europe. So him asking me to go to MFAH on July 4th, 2018, was nothing out of the ordinary. As storms rolled in on the morning of July 4th and our phones alerted us of flooding and extreme weather warnings, I figured we wouldn’t and shouldn’t go to the museum. Boye insisted the museum was the perfect rainy day activity, he was pretty convincing. After arriving, our time went as it normally does. We studied each of the pieces in the digital art exhibit that day; laughing, chatting, snapping pictures & reminiscing on our “first date”. At one point, Boye recorded a video of me in front of a moving digital wall. As we turned a corner there was a moving digital tree that spanned an entire wall. I asked Boye, “Do you want me to take a picture of you in front of the tree?” He paused and seemed to be distracted, he then said, “I promised myself I wouldn’t cry...”, to which I’m certain I responded with the most perplexed look on my face, while thinking, “why would you cry?”. I don’t remember the words that followed as he went down on his knee. In that same moment, some of my closest friends came from around the corner (from one of the same sides of the exhibit which we were just at, looking at art)! Needless to say, I was overwhelmed with shock and excitement. It took a few moments for me to calm down before finally saying, “OF COURSE!”, in front of the digital “tree of life”.
