Volcano Fuego in Guatemala is a very active volcano and still currently pushes out ash and lava sometimes. You can’t hike that volcano, but you can hike up the Acatenango volcano, which will give you a great view of Fuego for an amazing experience and photos. Now, this volcano hike isn’t for the faint-hearted or the unfit. It’s pretty much a direct incline. For an extra cost, you can get a ride halfway up the volcano and you can hike the rest. It’s truly a lifetime experience, and you should definitely go for it if you’ve got the time and the fitness level. There are various tour operators that offer different services and options. Old Town Outfitters is the best we've worked with, though they are more expensive than others. Feel free to shop around. But no matter the operator, your rental should include your food and equipment.
Pacaya volcano is located around an hour and fifteen minutes from the city and it’s an easier hike than the one above. This volcano frequently erupts, but only with ash which makes it hot enough to roast marshmallows. Tours are offered in the morning or in the afternoon. The afternoon tour will afford hikers a stunning sunset view over some of the most impressive volcanic landscapes in all of Central America. The hike will probably take you around 2 hours. It’s a relatively short hike, but it is steep. It's unlikely you will see LAVA! But it's still very cool. Various tour operators in Antigua can align your Pacaya experience. We've included a recommended operator, but feel free to shop around.

A full day of moderate hiking that takes you climbing out of the Antigua Valley to the top of a nearby ridge. The trail traverses the ridge to a tiny pueblo hidden away on the mountainside. The views back towards the Antigua valley and its three towering volcanoes are magnificent as the entire sweep of the valley - from the peak of Agua Volcano to the Acatenango and Fuego complex - frame the vista. From there, the trail drops down into a working coffee Finca and then climbs into another lively mountain village. Another hour on beautiful contouring valley walls and then the trail takes you back into Antigua.
This is a beginner to intermediate mountain bike ride with a tour of a local coffee farming co-op. Our ride out to the coffee co-op of De la Gente is the flip side to seeing the large-scale production farm on the Azotea Sip n' Cycle tour. This ride will take us to a community on the flank of Volcán de Agua where local farmers work together as a co-op to grow, pick and process their own coffee for export. De La Gente works with the local farmers’ co-op to help them brand their coffee and reach markets in North America and Europe. We will take a private tour with one of the co-op farmers to their field and then go to their house to see how they toast the coffee on a small batch at a time level. Finally, we will have lunch with the family before heading back to Antigua. This trip is more expensive than the ride out to commercial coffee farms, but a portion of your trip price goes straight to the farmer/co-op for the tour there. Tours begin at 9:00 AM and end at 2:00 PM.
Explore the countryside of Antigua with your own private guide on a full-day tour that visits farms that benefit the indigenous community and environment. Many people consider the Artisan Market to be the main ‘tourist market’. Full of colourful textiles, traditional blankets, wooden masks, jade jewellery and woven purses, it’s an incredibly photogenic place to wander around. Because it’s a tourist market, you won’t find any animals here (dead or alive), and the stalls are arranged in an orderly manner, with clean, swept floors and a lovely entrance. Never buy anything at face value; vendors usually increase the price by three, so use that as a reference point when haggling.
El Hato is a charming village that's just a 20-minute drive from Antigua. One of the best places to visit here is Earth Lodge which offers quirky accommodations, a restaurant, an avocado farm, and yoga classes with a view. You'll also want to head to Altamira which is home to a wooden hand viewpoint that overlooks the volcanoes - perfect for photographs. Last but not least, make sure you visit Hobbitenango which is essentially a fantasy park that's home to hobbit holes, incredible viewpoints, and quirky restaurants. Although there are plenty of awesome things to do in this area, it's the views that will take your breath away! So, if you've got some extra time I definitely recommend heading out to this charming village. You'll want to pack your camera too! Check-in with any tour operators in Antigua and they can advise how to get there. We recommend Old Town Outfitters.
