On clear days, you can even see the Chicago skyline across the lake while you build sandcastles on the beach. Please keep in mind that there are a National Park and a State Park by the same name of Indiana Dunes. Each requires an entrance pass, though the daily passes are reasonably priced and can be purchased at the entrance to each park.
Although Warren Dunes State Park is smaller than Indiana Dunes, it is well worth the visit. There's plenty to do here with a massive beach, sandy dunes, forested trails, and creeks filled with critters. There is an entrance fee of $12 per car, which can be purchased at the park.
