It all started with Facebook. Gerardo sent a friend request and after accepting, he immediately sent an instant message. This is not where it all began because it took a couple more years and maturing to allow our relationship to truly blossom. It was Spring 2013. We started hanging out again since high school. We quickly became good friends and found ourselves spending everyday together. Before we knew it (I think everyone else knew it before us) we were in love. We were convinced to make long distance work. Tonya would be moving to San Marcos, TX to attend Texas State. Long distance was hard but we both worked twice as hard to make it work. Tonya is a planner and an over thinker. Gerardo lives a day at a time and doesn't take things too seriously. Tonya has a big heart and truly cares about others. Gerardo is funny and adventurous. Together we make a great team. We have built our own little family in New Braunfels, Texas. 7 years and two fur children later, we are finally making it official.
Picture Christmas time at Sundance Square in Downtown Fort Worth. It was cold and windy. All of the trees were lit up with lights and there were families enjoying the events around. Christmas is our favorite holiday, mostly because we are surrounded by family and good food. I was expecting to see the tree and take a few pictures before I left for my family vacation. As we walked in front of the tree I saw Gerardo getting nervous. I wasn't sure why and I definitely did not think he was going to propose. We are standing in front of this massive tree just staring at it... I ask if we can take a picture but he asks me to wait. In this moment, I started to realize what was happening. There was hundreds of people around and as he dropped down on his knee it was just him and I. Very cheesy, I know but VERY true. He asked me to marry him and I just stood there in silence (mostly shock), taking it all in. SPOILER, I said YES! As I looked up it was our close family and friends cheering for us. I cried uncontrollably. My 80 year grandmother stood in the cold to watch this special moment. It was truly magical.
