Question

What is the history of Jamaica

Answer

The original inhabitants of Jamaica were the Taino people. They fell victim to Spanish and then British colonial greed. West Africans were brought over as slaves for the Spaniards and then for Great Britain. Jamaica was a British colony from the 1600s up until 1962 when the country gained "independence". Although independent, Jamaica is still a part of the British Commonwealth where the British monarchy still remains Head of State to this day. As an ex-colony of the British crown- Jamaica is an English speaking country that is largely Christian and drive on the left. Jamaica's population of 3 million is predominantly Black (90%) and the rest of the population are mainly White, Indian and Chinese. Most of the Indians and Chinese have been there for centuries and came as indentured servants after the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade in the 1800s. Tourism is the greatest source of economic growth for the Jamaican government, but the investment into making sure citizens reap the benefit is lacking. Although Jamaica has its share of problems, the people manage to excel. The tiny island of Jamaica is mighty on the world stage in Music, Athletics, Politics and more.
