Question

What is an Anand Karaj?

Answer

Anand Karaj is the Sikh wedding ceremony which means “ceremony of joy”. It takes place in a Sikh place of worship and entails singing from the holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib. The bride and groom will walk around the holy scripture four times and in doing so commit to each other and become "one soul in two bodies".

Question

What is the dress code for the wedding ceremonies?

Answer

There are 3 main things to take note when entering a Sikh prayer hall: 1. Wear Comfortable Clothing. Traditionally, guests are seated on a carpeted floor, so we recommend you wear pants, long/loose skirts or dresses. Why? This tradition was set to show humility before the Guru Granth Sahib (the Sikh holy book) and indicates that everyone is in a place of equal status in the eyes of God. Note: cushions and chairs will also be available for your comfort. 2. Your head must be covered. Men typically wear bandanas, and women wear long scarves or shawls. Please, no hats. It is required that all guests cover their heads when entering the prayer room, but don't worry....we will provide clean head coverings for all of our guests. 3. No shoes inside the prayer hall. You will be asked to take off your shoes before entering the ceremony.

Question

What happens after the Anand Karaj?

Answer

The East meets West. Immediately following the Anand Karaj, you will have time to gather your belongings and head to the courtyard for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres before everyone will gather to witness the bride and groom exchange vows in a spiritual love ceremony. Formal lunch to follow.

Question

There Are A Few Hours Between The Wedding And Reception. What should I do?

Answer

That is free time! We encourage you to relax and recharge before the reception party begins. It's customary that guests change into more formal attire for the reception. If you don't have a hotel room or don't care to change, feel free to view our "Things To Do" page for ideas on places to visit while you're in Monterey.

Question

Where will the reception take place?

Answer

Our reception is being held at Hotel Del Monte on the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School grounds. Everyone attending must fill out an ID verification form to get on base. Once you RSVP, we will send you this form along with directions on where to submit it.

Question

What is the attire for the reception?

Answer

We recommend formal or black tie attire. There are no restrictions, but come in your finest and wear your dancing shoes!
