Snorkel or Kayak the Sunken city of ancient Epidavros

Snorkel or Kayak the Sunken city of ancient Epidavros

Kalymnios Beach, Epidavros, Greece

The sunken city is just off the coast of Mouria's beach. The Sunken City was accidentally discovered in the 1970s due to an aerial photo taken from a hot-air balloon. The architectural remains include traces of an ancient port, various walls and a cluster of three buildings, the closest of which is located only 45 meters from the shore. Archeologists believe these are the remains of a rural Roman villa from the 2nd century, which was inhabited by a wealthy Roman family and their staff. Although not a huge site, the underwater city of Epidavros is very unique and fun to explore. The ruins lie very close to the shore and just 2 meters below the sea level. They are relatively easy to visit when it’s warm enough to swim, or snorkel.

Ancient site of Mycenae

Ancient site of Mycenae

Mykines, Greece

1 Hour from Mouria and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Archeological site dates from approximately 1350-1200 BCE, Mycenae was the centre of the Bronze-Age Mycenaean civilization that was spread across mainland Greece, the Aegean islands and a small amount of the eastern coast of modern Turkey. The site in Mycenae brings to mind some of the best known Greek legends of all - it was named by Homer as the home of Agamemnon, one of the great kings from the Trojan War.

Wine Tasting in Nemea

Wine Tasting in Nemea

Nemea, Greece

Historians can safely say that wine-growing in Neméa dates back to at least the 5th Century BC. The Heracles myth says he was sent to slay the Nemeian lion and on his travels, he discovered this northeast Greek region where he first made wine. The Fliasion wines made in Neméa were, even in antiquity, particularly famed for their quality. The term "blood of Heracles" has been used as a nickname to identify the red wine of Neméa up until the present day.

Geocaris Ancestral Home

Geocaris Ancestral Home

Giokarika, Greece

For the Geocaris clan, consider making the 1.5 hour drive to Giokareika to visit our ancestral home. The house of Tina's Great Papu Alex is still standing and still has a Geocaris living there in the summers! Alex was born in the Giokareika house while his older siblings were born in the neighboring town of Tegea, which has a fantastic little museum with local ancient artifacts and Peloponnese history.

Day Trip to Nafplio

Day Trip to Nafplio

Nafplio, Greece

40 minutes from Mouria. Tina loves strolling through the beautiful white a blue streets with their tavernas, pink flowers, and cute shops. Nafplio is often missed by international visitors yet is a favorite with locals. Less than two hours' drive from Athens, Nafplio is considered to be one of the best (and most romantic) getaways in Greece. Nafplio was the first capital of the modern Greek state and is now a vibrant seaside town with imposing castles, impressive churches and fascinating museums. The town has a long and rich history, spanning from ancient times through to Venetian, Ottoman and modern states. Along with its beautiful and eclectic architecture, you'll find stunning natural features and a strong sense of culture in the town.

Souvlaki and the Corinth Canal

Souvlaki and the Corinth Canal

If you are driving to Epi, be sure to stop to grab a Souvlaki and to see the Corinth Canal! Google Review: "Not a tourist trap! To ALL Athenians over 40, the Corinth Canal SOUVLAKI is legendary and connected with beautiful childhood memories. Our parents always stopped there for the view of the canal, the "street-food souvlaki" and to make us happy. The waiter dressed like a maître belongs to the vintage ambient. The quality remains the same since the early 70s (my first memories of the place) and has the taste of authenticity: small skewers with juicy pork meat, enhanced with oregano and lemon juice. All year round, it is a joy for us older Greeks to go down this memory lane, off the modern high speed motorway."
