– The Proposal(s) – PT. 1

April 24th, 2018

Channel your inner Sophia Petrillo, "Picture it...ROME, 2018, We BOTH propose!" Isn't that nuts? For months we both planned our proposals. What's really funny is that we both joked that we were "never getting married", Elian said it to me all the time and that made me SO nervous to propose, but it didn't stop me. So here's how it all happened... My best man (This is TJ speaking...) Christopher Berry, had reached out to me asking if Elian and I would like to join him and his girlfriend Christina on a trip to Italy so he could meet her parents for the first time, he was nervous. I thought this would be an awesome opportunity to propose, while abroad, with beautiful sites, great food, and an awesome experience to boot. From here I went into full planning mode. While researching the most romantic spots to propose in Italy, Trevi Fountain came up as the top hit. It's a beautiful site, quite historic, but way "too many people"...Elian is SUPER SHY to begin with, and the thought of him potentially saying "NO" because of his nerves terrified me. So I planned something a little more private for my proposal. I thought I'd go the extra mile and plan a special date to throw him off the scent of my actual proposal plans. If you know Elian, you KNOW he LOVES ALL THINGS PASTA (carbs). So I found an AWESOME private cooking class with renown chef, Federico Alessandri–Founder of "Chef in a Day", in the heart of Rome to teach us to make a variety of Italian cuisines. Our plan was to go on this special date on our first night in Rome, so when we arrived, we were early. I asked the group if we could go site seeing to some of the historic sites that were close to our class, everyone agreed...but Elian didn't seem to realize what we were doing in the moment. Upon his realization, he PANICKED, he DEMANDED I dress up, I told him "ABSOLUTELY NOT, it's far too hot outside to dress up"...so he was mad, but still dressed up anyway despite my refusal. So we headed out on our way.

Our first stop was The Spanish Steps, absolutely beautiful, really all of Italy is this way, so I'll probably say that for just about everything we visited. We spent a short time here, running into stores and taking photos. Next up was the INFAMOUS Trevi Fountain, considered to be the MOST romantic spot to propose... according to google at least. Man-o-man was it packed! I was so glad I decided against it, Elian would've said "NO" in a heart beat. So we saw an open spot on the far side of the fountain where the crowd wasn't quite as congested. We proceeded to wander over to this spot, Elian was walking and taking video on Facebook Live. He said "Liedel, let's take a picture"... he always calls me "Liedel", I never know if I'm in trouble. So he proceeds to take my backpack off and hand it to our friends, we line up to take the photo (mind you I hate taking pictures, I don't like smiling I think I look awkward). So as we are posing, Elian starts to fidget around. I tell him "stand still for the damn photo"... with the quickness, he pops out a box, gets on one knee and opens the box and just quietly stares at me, shaking like a leaf...not even a MURMUR came from this man...he was SO NERVOUS, it was quite comical and adorable in hindsight. I paused, which obviously didn't help HIS nerves. There was a couple sitting behind us on the fountain ledge, if you see the photos, they look MASSIVELY confused. I of course, proceeded to say "YES" and we all celebrated. Keep in mind, it was so difficult to not go "OH CRAP, I was gonna do this tomorrow"...but I bit my tongue. So from here we continued on our day till it was time for our private cooking class, which when I tell you was a "one of a kind experience"... I'm not kidding, Alessandri was AMAZING. So the following day, it was my turn! Still SUPER nervous, I set the plan in motion. We spent our morning site seeing and doing things as a group, till early afternoon, where I had a private car pick us up.

So once we were dressed and ready, it was time to set the plan into motion. Elian thought we were just going for a fancy dinner, but it was obviously so much more. Upon leaving the house, I realized that my best man, Christopher still had the ring (oh no), so I text him that he needed to RUN like the wind to the location...The private car drove us around town to the beautiful Parco del Pincio where they promptly dropped us off. While driving up the hill to the park, I was sitting with Elian and saw Chris and our friends "casually running" along the side of the road, so I had to distract Elian from seeing them, so I started up conversation until we got passed them, phew. So as we exited the vehicle and proceeded to walk to the restaurant I set my next plan in motion. What Elian didn't know was that I had hired an undercover proposal photographer, Andrea Matone, to lead us to the "perfect proposal spot". With a simple nod I walked Elian behind Andrea from a distance to "the spot". From here, there was a fence overlooking the beautiful city of Rome. I told Elian to wait there while I ran over to the merchant cart "to get some drinks", this is where I grabbed the ring and proposal scrapbook from Chris. When I went back over, Elian was curious why I didn't have drinks but a scrap book instead. I proceeded to open the book which contained photos of some of our past memories together. Elian and I have a shelf in our home that contains small trinkets from memories past. I had my dear friend. Justin Conant, photograph some of these to put into the book. From here, it was all downhill folks...lol! Elian was onto it, and as he looked around, he happened to notice Chris' FLIP FLOPS BEHIND the merchant cart, to which he said "Why is Berry here", so the jig was up, Chris and our group of friends came out from hiding...and just watched me quiver. So after that settled, I continued to flip through the book, coming upon empty pages, and I stopped and I said...

"Babe, we have so many good memories together and these blank pages represent the many amazing memories we have yet to make...but I have one special memory in mind to make right now", I proceeded to pull out the Tiffany box and hand it to him. The sales person at Tiffany's SWORE I should keep it wrapped as my fiancee would love opening the gift box containing the ring box. How do we think this went? Not like salesman said it would... Elian was so nervous he couldn't get the box open, so he handed it back to me and said "Babe, you open it" and I was already a nervous wreck, which caused me to make the knot even tighter...but we got it out, I opened the blue velvet box revealing Elian's Diamond and Sapphire Tiffany Engagement ring (he demanded Tiffany if we ever proposed, and it HAD TO HAVE "SAF-FIRE"...). Elian's eyes LIT UP! I then formally asked "Elian Imanol Echeverria, will you do me the pleasure of marrying me?" to which he giggled and said "Yes, of course babe". From here we kissed to "seal the deal" and then proceeded to walk over to our friends who were now just feet away watching us. We all laughed at the experience (which is ALSO on Facebook live). Then we split ways again to head off to dinner. Our professor of Italian Cuisine, Federico connected us with a table at the world renown Michelin Star restaurant Imàgo which is where we ended our night. If you ever have the chance to eat here, please do, the views are PHENOMENAL. I do have more story, hilarious story at that involving our experience here, but I will save that for the wedding. I hope you've enjoyed our proposal story, it was quite the experience for both of us. Apparently both Elian and I asked Chris to hold our rings about an HOUR apart from each other. He told me later that he felt like a jewelry smuggler. We look forward to seeing everyone at the wedding and sharing more of our stories with you come this August. With Love– TJ and Elian <3
