“It all started at East Cobb Middle School, where she was a teacher and he was a student.” “No, no, no. That’s not right. I’ll take it from here.” These two actually met at East Cobb Middle School where Kathryn was the orchestra director and Tim was student teaching with the BAND program. Tim started interrupting Kathryn’s usually solitary lunches with daily conversations, took her to more sporting events in a single semester than she had attended in her entire life (three), and plinked out a few wrong notes on the piano at her fall orchestra concert. The students somehow saw it coming before they did, when they began calling Kathryn “Mrs. V”—no matter how emphatically she insisted they were not dating. Fast forward to Friday, March 13, 2020, when the world shut down. Kathryn went from working four jobs to working half a job and suddenly had endless time on her hands. It may be thanks to the pandemic that Tim and Kathryn were able to spend so much time together in Marietta and Woodstock, often helping his uncle with various farming projects. Somewhere along the way, things became official when Tim asked: “Does your mother know?” “Does she know what?” “Does she know that you have a boyfriend?” “…Do I know if I have a boyfriend?” That fall, they moved to Tallahassee, Florida so Kathryn could pursue her PhD at Florida State University. During their three years there, they expanded their family to include their toy Australian Shepherds, Luna and Teddy. Tim and Kathryn have since returned to Georgia, where Kathryn is the orchestra director at Collins Hill High School and Tim is an Analyst at The Home Depot Store Support Center. Tim has become an irreplaceable part of the Collins Hill Orchestra program—chaperoning field trips, helping at performances, and even including the students in his proposal during a trip to Nashville this spring. Even better than finally getting a ring (after six and a half years, but who’s counting?) was watching the students’ reactions when he got down on one knee. In their spare time, Tim and Kathryn enjoy training their puppies in agility, competing at Activate with Tim’s future in-laws, playing endless board games, successfully escaping escape rooms, and spending time with both sides of their family whenever possible. We can’t wait to celebrate our journey with all of you against the backdrop of the vibrant autumn leaves at Lake Laceola this October.
