A few of our favourite places in the Bulkley Valley
Local Hiking - Hudson Bay Mountain

Local Hiking - Hudson Bay Mountain

Trailhead: Hudson Bay Mountain Resort Green T Bar Parking Lot, Smithers, BC V0J 2N0, Canada

| Round the Mountain Trail | A new, gentle multi-use trail that opened in 2024 that circles the top of the ski resort. Great for running, biking, or hiking, with really pretty views of the surrounding mountains not visible from town. This is one of the only trails in town that dogs are not allowed on due to the sensitive alpine environment. Currently an out-and-back trail, takes about 1-1.5 hrs one-way by foot, about 40 mins one-way by bike. | Crater Lake Trail | Popular trail also starting at the ski resort green T-bar parking lot that rewards you lovely views of the valley, wildflowers, and the titled alpine lake. Roundtrip about 3 hrs, moderate-difficult, as beginning sections are steep. A longer, challenging route can be tacked on to get to the peak of Hudson Bay Mountain.

Local Hiking - Twin Falls

Local Hiking - Twin Falls

Smithers, BC, Canada

| Twin Falls | A 15 minute gentle hike bringing you to a viewing platform of Twin Falls, which roar in the springtime. The waterfalls are fed from the Hudson Bay Glacier, which can be seen from the highway if you are driving in from Terrace. Trailhead is at the BC rec site campground about 15 minutes from town by car. | Glacier Gulch | The foot of the glacier feeding Twin Falls can be hiked to if you are in the mood for some moderately difficult scrambling, which is accessible via unsanctioned trails (the Glacier Gulch Trail) near the Twin Fall viewing platform. This longer trail is for confident hikers and takes about 4 hours roundtrip.

Local Hiking - Harvey Mountain

Local Hiking - Harvey Mountain

Smithers, BC, Canada

A great hike in the Babine Mountains Park that will make you marvel at the variety of terrain in and around Smithers. This moderate-difficult hike is a steady climb but not really technical, and you are rewarded with a vast alpine playground at the top. Round trip about 4.5 hours.

Local Hiking - Malkow Lookout

Local Hiking - Malkow Lookout

Smithers, BC, Canada

An easily accessible, gentle hike close to town with some great views of the Bulkley Valley. Easy-moderate hiking, you'll pass through a few farms (with hiker use permitted), then up to the communication tower where there's a picnic table. Some sections on the flats can be fairly muddy. You can spot Malkow Lookout from the other side of the valley on our deck! About 2hrs roundtrip.

Riverside Municipal Park

Riverside Municipal Park

Smithers, BC, Canada

Perhaps the most accessible way to enjoy a visit to the Bulkley River. Several picnic tables and a playground are at the Riverside Municipal Campground right in Smithers, located directly along the river. Walk a short portion of the Smithers Perimeter Trail from the campground to get to the rocky flats of the river's edge to have a sweet picnic or skip stones. You can take a nice 35-minute loop walk along the river and back through the forest, or just hang out near the water.

Local Lakes

Local Lakes

BC, Canada

| Lake Kathlyn | Near the airport and close to our house, Lake Kathlyn has a small but sandy beach that is about 5 minutes from town. Nice paddling on the lake because of the insane mountain views - rentals can be found at Aquabatics just off the highway near the airport. | Tyhee Lake | About 15 minutes from downtown east on the highway toward Telkwa, Tyhee Lake is the main public swimming beach in the area. There are lots of picnic tables, a playground, a sheltered picnic area, and other campground amenities. The water can be a bit weedy if you swim very far out, but great for cooling off on a hot day!

Mountain Biking

Mountain Biking

Smithers, BC, Canada

Mountain bikers know Smithers. Lots of technical downhill trails but also some great flow trails, and a few new beginner trails. For experienced riders, shuttle up to Hudson Bay Mountain to ride Backdoor with an exit onto the Boyle Rd trail to get directly to our house where we will reward you with a post ride bevy. Bikes can be rented for a day or more from McBike on Main St. See link for trail areas in town, but note there are also several backcountry biking routes through the parks just out of town as well. Lots of people also really love gravel biking along the back roads in the area, and there is a really cool paved trail heading out of town east toward Telkwa that is part of the not-yet-completed Cycle 16 Trail, which will be a 12 km paved multi-use trail connecting Smithers and Telkwa.

Main Street Shopping

Smithers, BC, Canada

Stroll down Main Street for some local vibes. Check out the Art Gallery + BV Museum and the Farmer's Market on Saturday morning (just make sure you leave for the wedding on time!) just across the highway. Wave to Alpine Al playing his alpenhorn in the middle of the street. Find treasures within the boutique stores along the way and into the sidestreets, including upscale children's toys/clothes, hand-crafted pottery, bougie gift shops, kitchen tools, quality women's clothing, outdoor gear, used and new books, stationary, local art pieces, and tasty treats. Special shoutouts are Salt women's clothing (pricey but beautiful, staple pieces chosen by the owner) and Kitchen Works (the owner has great recommendations). UFO has good Ukrainian food. Sausage Factory has great local meats - we love the duck pâté, but you have to leave with at least a landjaeger for your walk. Pretty much all the other listed places below are located directly on or just a block off Main Street.

Poutine Shack Food Truck

Poutine Shack Food Truck

Smithers, BC, Canada

This Quebecois-owned food truck is usually stationed at Goat Park (Main St and Hwy 16, across from the firehall) on Friday evenings and at the Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings. They have a wide selection of different poutines, the cheese curds are legit as is the smoked meat topping. Not a bad place to stop at prior to heading out for drinks on Friday night.

Foodie Heaven Restaurant

3835 1 Avenue, Smithers, BC V0J 2N3, Canada

Our favourite restaurant in town with several different cuisines, but we come for the Bengali food. Tiff cannot pass up the lamb biryani and Andy's fave is the Dhaka shawarma roll. The crispy shrimp roll appetizer is also so delicious!

Smithers Brewing Co.

3832 3 Avenue, Smithers, BC V0J 2N0, Canada

Fun local craft brewery that just won Craft Brewery of the Year at the 2025 Canadian Brewing Awards! Long list of craft beers on tap as well as proprietary hard seltzers and non-alcoholic pours like the kombucha and nitro cold brew. Great patio in the heart of downtown. Andy's pick: anything Czech or one of their Pilsners. Tiff's pick: Nitro cold brew

Paul's Bakery

3840 Broadway Avenue, Smithers, BC V0J 2N3, Canada

Our weekend errands are made better with pastries from Paul's Bakery. We love the bear claws and the cream-filled long johns. The Dutch cinnamon sugar bread is also great! Steph (bridesmaid) makes a mean French toast with it.

Bugwood Coffee | Cafe

1206 Main Street, Smithers, BC V0J 2N0, Canada

Bugwood Coffee sips can be found at their mini cabin on the corner of Main Street and 2nd Avenue downtown. A staple while strolling around town on a fall day (or any day, really). They have a great section of beans roasted right here in Smithers. Andy's recommendation: Nitro Cold Brew. Tiffany's recommendation: London Fog. Bonus: many Smithereens go crazy for their overnight oats.
